Here is what to expect...
Experience 800 Acres of Living History in Historic Brattonsville where History comes alive. Historic Brattonsville is a premier living history site featuring more than 30 historic structures dating from the 1760s through the 19th century. From the Revolutionary War to the Reconstruction era, we’ll discover the stories of the Bratton family, the enslaved community, and the Freedmen who shaped the land.
We’ll visit The Revolutionary House, the home of Colonel William and Martha Bratton and learn about the Battle of Huck’s Defeat, a turning point in the American Revolution. On the evening of July 12, 1780, Huck and a force of roughly 120 Loyalist Militia and British Legion dragons (calvary) arrived at Colonial Brattons home. Huck confronted Colonial Bratton’s wife Martha Robertson Bratton, demanding to know her husband’s whereabouts. When she fiercely refused to answer, a Loyalist soldier threathened her throat with a reaping hook before an officer intervened. According to local traditioned, Martha sent a enslaved man named Watt to slip away through the woods. Watt successfully tracked down Colonial Bratton at Sumter’s camp to warn him of the British occupation. Learning of their families immediate danger, Bratton and Captain Edward Lacy gathered around 140 to 250 local militiamen and rode through the night to protect their homes. As the sun rose, the Patriots opened fire from behind the tree line and fence rows. Caught completely by surprise, the British troops were trapped in a bottleneck and unable to form an effective defense line. Captain Christian Huck rushed out of the Williamson house without his green jacket, desperately mounting his horse to rally his dragoons. As he swung, a Patriot Militiaman named John Carroll took careful aim and shot him dead. With their commander dead and the road blocked, the remaining Loyalist troops threw down their weapons or fled into the surrounding woods. The entire engagement was over in roughly 15 minutes.
We’ll also enjoy The Heritage Farm Program: Meet rare, period-appropriate livestock, including Gulf Coast Sheep, Devon Cattle, and Ossabaw Island Hogs.
The Brick House & Liberty Exhibit: Visit the newly restored “Liberty & Resistance” exhibit, which details
the African-American community’s struggle for civil rights during the Reconstruction Era.
Living History Demonstrations: Interact with costumed interpreters practicing 18th and 19th-century farming, cooking, and blacksmithing.
