Still one of my favorite Greenville stories.: “A Profile In Courage” Big Chuck loves this story! He Defied Nixon! Greenville's own Johnnie “Mac” Walters. “A Profile in Courage: He Stood Up to Nixon” On August 6, 1971, Mr. Walters capped a long career of public service when President Richard M. Nixon named the native South Carolinian as U.S. Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. By 1972, the noose known as Watergate was beginning to strangle the president and he became unhinged. He drew up a list of enemies (real or perceived) and ordered the IRS Commissioner to investigate each of them and dig up dirt. Walters would do no such thing so he defied President Nixon’s order. Reports later said that he received the list, put it in a sealed envelope, and ignored it at his own peril. Shortly after, the presidency of Richard Nixon sank and he resigned. Johnnie Mac Walters left the IRS in 1973, and returned to his home in Greenville where he became an esteemed attorney. He wrote his life story, “Our Journey,” and was later hailed as a man with great commitment and integrity during one of our country’s darkest national events. Johnnie McKeiver Walters rests eternally at First Baptist Church in Greenville.
Thank you for your service, sir.

Max and Trude Heller were pillars of the Greenville community. The couple settled in the Upstate after separately fleeing from Austria after the N**i invasion during World War II. They spent their life giving back to Greenville, contributing to the city’s revitalization, culture and community.
