Here's a view of the southwest corner of Main and Washington. Top photo from the 1890s and bottom from 2020. This is the SAME building. Walter’s Drug store occupied the first floor while other various offices/businesses were on the upper floors. In the 1890s, this was the edge of downtown. Beyond this corner were a few Victorian homes and fields/pastures. Herds of animals would be driven down from Kentucky and NC down the mountain. Some were driven further to Augusta or Pendleton for sale, but here we see a cattle sale going on in the middle of Main St at the entrance to downtown. The top floors of the old building were destroyed in a fire in the 1970s but Sushi Murasaki Greenville is in the first floor of the original 1890s structure. Next time you are in or next to the building, take a look at the very old bricks on the walls. GVLtoday

I love hosting so many visitors, newcomers, and locals on my history and food tours. VisitGreenville SC regularly hosts journalists to our city to check us out and possibly write articles, etc. and I get to tell them all about our city, its history, its developments, and its culinary scene. Thankful they invited Katie Corrigan Seeman, who wrote about her experience for Upgraded Points and discussed many of the great things around town. Here's the link.

The 1970s and 80s were rough for a lot of downtown Greenville, especially in the West End. One of the most dramatic transformations and building preservation efforts in this area (along with the New Realm Brewery space at 912 S. Main) is with the wonderful 1894 Touchstone House overlooking Falls Park. It started out as a residential house with multiple renters in its first decades. With the rise of automotive shops in this part of town, it then became various service stations and lost its charm over generations until it closed c1967. This photo is in the early 70s after the SPUR gas station closed and before the Carolina Foothills Garden Club took it over and renovated it to its former glory in 1976. It served as the home of the Greenville Artists Guild, Metropolitan Arts Council, Falls Cottage, Cottage Cuisine restaurant and more recently Mary’s restaurant. While it is empty today, it will soon again be put in use for the community with a new restaurant called Stone Cottage by my friends at Passerelle Bistro . Thankful for this gem and that it is the only 19th century home still left on Main St.
