How do you plan a first trip to Ireland when there's so much to see?

This is the question I hear most often from couples who've been dreaming about Ireland for years — and are finally ready to go. And I completely understand why. Between the Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher, Dublin, Galway, Di**le, Giant's Causeway, and all those charming villages in between... where do you even start?

That's exactly why I wrote this guide.

It walks you through everything a first-time Ireland traveler actually needs to know before they go — how much time to plan for each region, what to book in advance, what to leave flexible, how to handle driving on the left, where to splurge and where to keep it simple, and how to design an itinerary that feels spacious instead of rushed.

Because Ireland isn't a place to check boxes. It's a place to breathe in. To linger. To finally experience the trip you've been talking about for a decade.

If Ireland is on your list, I'd love to know — what are you most curious about? Or what's been holding you back from booking? Drop a comment and let me know.

What makes an Irish pub different from every other bar you've ever walked into?

It's not just the Guinness or the wood-paneled walls. It's the fact that the moment you step inside, you're expected to belong. No reservation needed. No dress code. No questions about whether you're drinking whiskey or just nursing a cup of tea.

I've sat in pubs from Dublin to Di**le, Galway to Donegal, and every single time, the rhythm is the same. Someone picks up a fiddle. A conversation starts at the bar. A stranger pulls up a chair. And suddenly, you're part of something that feels like it's been going on for centuries — because it has.

Irish pubs aren't designed for isolation. They're designed for gathering. The music isn't background noise piped through speakers — it's live, often spontaneous, and played by people who grew up with those songs in their bones. The bartender knows half the room by name. The other half? They will by the end of the night.

You don't have to drink to be welcome. You just have to show up. That's the magic of it. It's not a bar. It's a living room that happens to serve pint glasses alongside the stories.

If you've been to Ireland, what pub moment stays with you? I'd love to hear it.

Does Ireland really live up to all the hype you hear about it?

I finally got to answer that question for myself this year — and I'm here to tell you: yes. Every bit of it. And then some.

After years of planning Ireland itineraries for my clients, I got to walk those same cobblestone streets in Kinsale, stand at the edge of the Cliffs of Moher, and drive the winding roads of the Ring of Kerry myself. I wanted to experience what my travelers experience. I wanted to see it through their eyes.

And what I found was this: Ireland doesn't disappoint. Not the landscapes. Not the warmth of the people. Not the quiet magic of a countryside drive or the energy of a pub session in Galway. It's everything people say it is — the green hills, the dramatic cliffs, the charming villages painted in impossible colors — and it's also more than that. It's the feeling you get when you're finally standing there, in the place you've been dreaming about for years.

If you've been holding Ireland in your heart as a "someday" trip, I hope this is your sign. It's worth it. Every single moment.

I wrote about everything I learned on this trip — the logistics, the surprises, the moments that made it unforgettable. You can read the full post at WhisperingWillowTravel.com (link in bio).

Now I want to hear from you: What's the ONE thing you most want to experience in Ireland? The cliffs? A castle? A pint in a local pub? Drop it in the comments — I'd love to know what's calling to you.

How much time should you spend in Dublin before exploring the rest of Ireland?

Here's what I tell every client planning their first Ireland journey: give Dublin two full days minimum. Not a quick overnight before you rush to the countryside — two real days.

Because Dublin isn't just where you land. It's where the story begins.

You'll want a morning to wander Trinity College and stand beneath the Long Room's barrel-vaulted ceiling, surrounded by 200,000 of the world's oldest books. You'll want time to trace literary footsteps through Georgian doorways and cobblestone lanes where Joyce and Wilde once walked. You'll want an unhurried afternoon in a proper pub, the kind with worn wood and live music and locals who'll tell you stories if you let them.

Dublin is deeply walkable. The history is layered into every street corner. And after two days of settling into the rhythm of Ireland — the pace, the people, the feeling — you'll leave for Galway or the Wild Atlantic Way with context. With connection. With roots.

It's not a stopover. It's the prologue to everything that follows.

If you're planning your Ireland trip, how much time were you thinking of spending in Dublin? Drop a comment — I'd love to know what's on your list.

What wildlife can you actually see on an Alaska cruise?

This is one of the most common questions I get from clients planning their Alaska adventure, and I love sharing the realistic expectations along with tips for maximizing your wildlife viewing opportunities!

Here's what you can genuinely expect to see:

🐋 **Humpback Whales** - Your chances are excellent! These magnificent creatures are spotted on approximately 90% of Alaska cruises during the May-September season. Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point, and the Inside Passage are your best bets. You'll often see them breaching, tail slapping, and feeding right from your ship's deck.

🐋 **Orcas (Killer Whales)** - More hit or miss, but still very possible with about a 50-60% sighting rate. They're most commonly seen in the waters around Juneau and the Inside Passage. Keep your eyes on the water during scenic cruising days!

🐻 **Bears** - Brown and black bears are frequently spotted during shore excursions rather than from the ship. Icy Strait Point offers some of the best bear viewing opportunities, particularly at Pack Creek or on wildlife tours. Your chances increase significantly with a dedicated bear-viewing excursion. I'd estimate about 60-70% of my clients who do these specific excursions see bears.

🦅 **Bald Eagles** - Nearly guaranteed! These majestic birds are abundant throughout Southeast Alaska. You'll see them perched along shorelines, soaring overhead, and especially in ports like Hoonah, Ketchikan, and Sitka. I'd say 95%+ of cruisers spot eagles.

🦦 **Sea Otters** - Very common with roughly 80% sighting probability, especially in Glacier Bay, near Sitka, and around the coastal areas. They're often spotted floating on their backs in kelp beds, and they're absolutely adorable to watch!

**My Best Advice**: Book excursions strategically if wildlife is your priority. Not all cruise itineraries and shore excursions are created equal for wildlife viewing. This is where working with an experienced travel advisor really pays off - I can help you choose the right cruise line, itinerary, and excursions to maximize your wildlife encounters based on your specific travel dates and interests.

The wildlife viewing in Alaska is truly bucket-list worthy, and with the right planning, you'll come home with incredible memories and photos. If you've been dreaming of an Alaska cruise, now is the perfect time to start planning for next season!

London is one of the most family-friendly cities in Europe. It is also one of the most underestimated when it comes to what it can offer a family trip.

The history is everywhere. The parks are stunning. The museums are world-class and mostly free. And it is entirely English-speaking, which makes a real difference for families new to international travel.

This blog covers how to make the most of a London family vacation.

What makes Ketchikan the most surprising port stop on an Alaska cruise?

Most first-time Alaska cruisers expect Ketchikan to be just another quick port stop, but this charming town consistently becomes travelers' favorite for one simple reason: it's the only port where you can experience world-class Indigenous culture, incredible wildlife viewing, AND lush rainforest exploration all in one day.

Here's what surprises visitors most:

**Creek Street's Colorful Past**: This historic boardwalk was once Ketchikan's red-light district (houses built on stilts over the creek so it was technically outside city limits!). Today it's been transformed into a picturesque collection of galleries, shops, and museums with some of the most photographed views in Alaska.

**The World's Largest Collection of Standing Totem Poles**: Ketchikan isn't just home to a few totem poles—it has the largest collection of authentic standing totem poles in the world. These aren't replicas; they're genuine masterpieces telling the stories of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. The craftsmanship and cultural significance will absolutely take your breath away.

**The Tongass National Forest**: At 17 million acres, this is America's largest temperate rainforest, and Ketchikan is your gateway. The moss-draped trees, salmon-filled streams, and wildlife encounters (eagles, bears, and yes—lots of salmon!) create an experience that's completely different from the glaciers you'll see at other ports.

What I love about working with Alaska cruise clients is helping them choose the right Ketchikan excursions for their interests. Some tours focus heavily on totem pole heritage and Indigenous culture, others take you deep into the rainforest for wildlife viewing, and some combine both beautifully. The difference between a good Ketchikan day and an unforgettable one often comes down to matching the right experience to what moves you most.

For couples in that sweet spot of life where you finally have time to take the Alaska cruise you've been dreaming about—Ketchikan delivers on every level. It's authentic, it's beautiful, and it will surprise you in the best possible way.

If you've been to Ketchikan, what surprised you most? And if it's on your bucket list, what would you want to experience first—the totem poles, Creek Street, or the rainforest wildlife?

Which Alaska shore excursions should you book in advance?

If you're planning an Alaska cruise, there are three excursions that consistently sell out months before departure – and for good reason. Let me share what I've learned from years of helping travelers experience Alaska:

The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad in Skagway is absolutely at the top of the list. This historic narrow-gauge railway climbs nearly 3,000 feet in just 20 miles, following the treacherous Trail of 1898 used by gold rush stampeders. The views are breathtaking, and capacity is limited by the vintage train cars themselves. I've seen this sell out 4-6 months before cruise departure during peak summer season.

Whale watching excursions in Juneau are the second to go. During summer months, humpback whales gather in incredible numbers to feed in the nutrient-rich waters. The most reputable tour operators with smaller vessels and experienced naturalists fill up fast – often 3-4 months out. There's truly nothing like watching a 40-ton humpback breach right before your eyes.

Flightseeing tours over glaciers round out the top three. Whether it's a helicopter landing on a glacier or a floatplane tour over Misty Fjords, these aircraft have strict weight and capacity limits. They also depend heavily on weather, so operators can't overbook.

Here's what I always tell my clients: waiting until you're onboard to book these excursions is risky. You might find they're sold out, or you'll be left with less desirable time slots that could conflict with your other plans. When you work with me, I help you secure these coveted spots well in advance, ensuring you experience the Alaska moments you've been dreaming about. I also know which excursions are truly worth the investment and which ones you can safely book later or skip altogether.

Your Alaska cruise is likely a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Let's make sure you don't miss out on the experiences that make it truly unforgettable.
