The history of "Cherokee, South Carolina" centers on the ancestral lands of the Cherokee people, who inhabited the Upstate region for centuries, with significant towns like Seneca and Keowee in present-day Clemson and Greenville areas before ceding territory through treaties, leading to the formation of modern Cherokee County in 1897 from parts of Spartanburg, Union, and York counties, named for these original inhabitants and later developing with textile mills, peach farming, and interstates.
"Cherokee in South Carolina" refers to both the historical presence of the Cherokee people in the state's northwest and the modern-day Cherokee County, formed in 1897 and named for them, with its county seat in Gaffney, SC, located near the NC border. While no large reservation exists in SC, descendants of the Cherokee remain, and organizations like the Eastern Cherokee, Southern Iroquois & United Tribes of SC advocate for their heritage, with historical Cherokee lands covering much of the Upstate region.
