Once again weird Wyoming weather has us a bit behind in getting all the baits set. Even today the boys rode in cold temps with random snow flurries. But they are finally all set and tomorrow we start over, going back, checking and rebaiting the first ones set last week.

Years from now, they won’t remember every detail… but they’ll remember who was there with them.

Time spent together out there isn’t just time passed—it’s something that shapes who they become.

To continue our discussion from yesterday about over estimating the simplicity of an antelope hunt I feel it's valuable to take a look at what that means for the hunter. . .

What Looks Simple vs. What Actually Matters

1. “They’re everywhere.”
✔️ Reality: Yes, there are a lot of antelope—but getting within range of a good buck is a different story.
They live in open country for a reason… they see EVERYTHING.

2. “It’s just a short shot.”
✔️ Reality: Most shots are 200–400 yards, sometimes more.
If a hunter hasn’t practiced at those distances—especially in the wind—it shows real fast.

3. “Flat ground = easy walking.”
✔️ Reality: It’s deceiving.
Uneven ground, cactus, mud, and long stalks can wear people out quick. Good boots matter more than people think.

4. “Just bring your rifle.”
✔️ Reality: Rifle setup matters.
• Dialed-in scope
• Knowing your ballistics
• Shooting off sticks or a pack (not a bench)

That’s a big one most overlook.

5. “You just spot and go.”
✔️ Reality: Stalking antelope is a chess match.
You need to:
• Use terrain (even when there’s not much of it)
• Read their body language
• Plan your approach with the wind

Blow one stalk and that herd might not stop running for a mile.

6. “Weather isn’t a big deal.”
✔️ Reality: Wyoming weather changes everything.
Heat, wind, sudden storms—it all affects:
• Animal movement
• Shot difficulty
• Hunter comfort and endurance

7. “Once you shoot it, you’re done.”
✔️ Reality: This is where a lot of hunts go wrong.
Antelope need to be taken care of FAST:
• Get them cooled down immediately
• Skin them quickly
• Keep meat clean and shaded

That’s the difference between amazing table fare and a bad experience.

The hunters who come prepared are the ones who enjoy it the most—and usually go home with the best experience (and the best meat).

That’s a big part of what we help with—making sure you’re ready before you ever step foot out here.

These are all things you know, we know that! But good hunts happen largely because of good communication, and good communication boils down to understanding each others expectations and then doing our best to meet those. Both sides are responsible for making this a great experience. Tangle Ridge Outfitters is 100% ready to do that for you!

Antelope hunts might look simple… and rightfully so, there are more antelope in Wyoming than people. It makes sense that an antelope hunt might be viewed as "easy".

But there’s a lot that goes into making them successful.

On our side we spend countless hours. . .
• Scouting water sources
• Watching herd patterns
• Setting blinds in the right spots (only to reset them again the next day, thanks to the Wyoming wind)
• Adjusting based on weather AND WYOMING WIND

We also spend a lot of time analyzing the preference points and license application process to make sure that we are making recomendations that will suit what your looking for in a hunt along with what you can realistically draw with the points you have. That, along with making sure you have all the information you need to be prepared for your hunt, is important to us.

We take pride in the preparation that goes into all of our hunts—and antelope, even though it may look like an “easier” hunt, is no different.

Tomorrow we'll discuss what you can do to be adequately prepared for your hunt. . .

There’s nothing quite like sitting a waterhole in early September.

It’s quiet… until it’s not.

You’ll watch antelope come in from all directions—cautious, curious, and sometimes running full speed.

Archery antelope hunting over water is:
• Up close
• Intense
• And completely different than anything else

If you’ve never done it, it’s an experience every bowhunter should have at least once.

🎯 Great draw odds
🎯 $300 off remaining spots
🎯 A few openings left

Ever wonder how Tangle Ridge Outfitters got its name?

Over 20 years ago, when we were first getting this business off the ground, we spent a lot of time tossing around ideas. We knew what we didn’t want just as much as what we did. We didn’t want something that sounded intimidating or over-the-top like “Rugged Cliff Outfitters,” and we didn’t want to tie ourselves to a specific landmark like “Trapper Canyon” or a hunt area.

At one point, “Blue Mountain Outfitters” was a serious contender. After all, if you’ve spent any time out here, you know the mountains always seem to have that blue hue when you’re looking at them from a distance.

But in the end, we landed on Tangle Ridge.

Funny enough, it actually came from a Canadian whiskey brand we had seen—one that used to have wildlife-themed labels on the bottles. Neither of us were big whiskey drinkers, but something about the name just stuck. It had a good ring to it, and it felt right.

The reason this all came back to me today is because I was out exercising a horse and caught myself staring at those same “blue” mountains again. It made me smile thinking about how close we came to going a different direction—and how Tangle Ridge ended up being exactly what it was supposed to be.

Sometimes the right name just finds you.
