Remember these fuel prices? Weren't those good times! Let's talk ways to save on fuel since it is on the rise.
1. Don't idle too long and keep your warm ups to a minimum.
2. Don't overfill your tank. Fuel expands when heated and when you fill your tanks full it also creates a heavier weight to haul.
3. Shower Power - plug in when you can instead of idling. This can save you over $3k each year by plugging in at fuel stops/layovers.
4. Use your cruise control! Find a steady speed and cruise.
5. Don't use excessive speed. Wonder why big companies govern the trucks? Because it saves THOUSANDS a year in fuel costs. Every mile per hour over 55mph lowers your fuel economy by 0.1 miles per gallon.
6. Fuel at truck stops on a hill! That way, when trying to get back onto the highway, you are easing onto it and using momentum.
7. Stay in top gear when you can. Let the engine lug down.
8. Make as few shifts as possible, shifting between 1150 and 1500 rpm.
8. Tires! Make sure you have good tires and keep them inflated.
9. Know your truck's mile per gallon mark. Average trucks are 6.5 mpg that are kept up with maintenance. The best drivers keep theirs above 8! Newer Trucks and technology are now at 10+.
Miles driven ÷ Gallons used = MPG
10. And most Importantly: At the end of the day, the driver is the key to vehicle performance. That’s why effective driver training can pay off almost immediately. Tests show drivers who adopt more fuel-efficient driving techniques can reduce fuel cost by 5% or greater. Combine a smart, well-trained driver with a fuel efficient drivetrain and plenty of fuel efficient devices on the tractor and trailer, and you have a recipe for savings.
