Saturday’s presentation of a lifetime achievement award for company founder and president Carroll Teitsworth: Presented by the Balloon Federation of America, the Shields-Trauger Award is the highest special award given by the Balloon Federation of America. It honors those within the ballooning community who have made significant contributions in several areas, one of which is “Important long-standing contributions to safety in ballooning.” Having pioneered the idea of a ground school within the hot air balloon community, Carroll incorporated his background in the Navy and fixed-wing worlds of aviation with his affinity for teaching to create a ground school that eventually reached hundreds (thousands?) of students all across the country, including original Balloons Over Letchworth Mick Hess, and then long time owner and the man who truly built up the business, Sean Quigley. As was mentioned at the event, most balloon pilots can likely trace some element of their pilot training back to Carroll, whether directly or through their own instructors.
Safety is never guaranteed, and we do not take it for granted; it’s why the last picture posted here is of “Grandpa” (Carroll) reviewing his granddaughter’s work (in this case, a balloon coloring sheet!) Grandpa Carroll has brilliantly passed along his vast experience to the next generations, and for that, we recipients are very grateful. Congratulations Captain Carroll on the well-deserved award! And since this event was combined with an end-of-year crew appreciation dinner, our thanks also to our crew members, without whom our business doesn’t operate—and wouldn’t be nearly as fun.
Cheers!!
(A couple of other shout outs: to the Letchworth State Park staff who set us up in the beautiful, one-of-a-kind Trailside Lodge venue: Thank you!! To Mick Murphy traveling from Connecticut to present the award, along with other friends and BFA reps traveling from near and as far as New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Buffalo, and Syracuse: our thanks to you for joining us! For special notes from Carroll’s daughter Liana in Virginia, and Carroll’s original LTA instructor Bill Hughes, and others who helped to make this event so special, please accept our warm thanks for joining, whether in person or in spirit, as you all were able. Thank you, and Happy Holidays to all!)
