We are so excited to introduce everyone to our newest member of our herd. Meet Nova! He is 11 months old and will be Luna's boyfriend during breeding, in the fall. He is an absolute sweet boy and loves going on walks and eating oats out of our hands. We think Luna is just smitten with him already. We have decided to open up the farm for a LIMITED time for folks to meet out newest bull. He won't be this cute and loveable once he gets older. We are offering private reindeer tours for groups of 5 or less. You will be able to go inside Luna and Nova's pen, feed and pet them and pose for photos, with these cuties! Don't miss this unique opportunity before we close again for calving.

Reindeer Ron and Christmas Cheryl recently returned from the Reindeer Farmers Association in Anchorage, Alaska. We learned so much, hung out with old friends and made new ones. While we were there we visited several reindeer farms, attended the ceremonial beginning of the Iditarod and the Running of the Reindeer. It was such a cool trip and we wanted to share some highlights. Stay tuned though, we will be making some BIG announcements in the next few days! 😉

Why do reindeer hooves click when they walk? It's their secret way of staying connected with the herd, even in blinding snowstorms and dark conditions.

Reindeer have a tendon that passes over bones in their foot that makes this magical clicking sound...just like the song says.....

Reindeer love this time of year! In winter, the hair of a reindeer's hide is multi-colored. The mane is white. The underbelly, rump, legs, and face are generally dark brown and the shoulders and ribs are light tan. In summer when the long guard hairs fall out and the soft fine 'downy' hairs are exposed, the reindeer appear dark colored (with white 'socks'). When considering the colors in the vegetation, snow, and on the hills and mountains in the background, it is thought that the reindeer's hair color serves to conceal them from predators.

Santa’s reindeer are most likely the R.t. platyrhynchus subspecies from the Svalbard islands off of Norway.
We know that because Clement C. Moore’s poem, "A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” which first introduced the world to Santa’s reindeer, describes them as tiny. The only reindeer that could really be considered tiny are the Svalbard subspecies (pictured), which weigh about half as much as the average reindeer species and are at least a foot shorter in length—that definitely proves useful when landing on roofs.

Broad hooves and dewclaws act as snowshoes and thereby enable the reindeer to travel more easily across deep snow. Other members of the deer family generally have small pointed hooves and, because they are not able to travel freely, may become restricted to small grazing areas called 'yards' when snowfalls are heavy. Researchers have found that reindeer can dig feeding craters when snow is as deep as 3 feet. Their shovel-like hooves also enable the reindeer to chip through hard and crusted snow.
