Did you know 70 years ago this is what Orange Beach looked like?

Long before the high-rise condos, packed traffic, and crowded beaches, Orange Beach was mostly quiet sand dunes, scattered beach houses, and long empty stretches of Alabama coastline. Old photos like this are hard to believe today. What’s now one of the busiest beach destinations on the Gulf Coast used to feel completely remote and untouched.

People came here for peace, fishing, sunsets, and simple family vacations — not giant resorts and crowds. A lot of longtime locals still remember when you could drive for miles and barely see another building on the shoreline.

Even though Orange Beach has changed tremendously over the decades, these old images remind people where it all started and why so many fell in love with Alabama’s coast in the first place.

One of the most cherished spots to visit by water are several small islands located in the bat of Orange Beach. Walker, Robinson and Bird Islands greet boaters coming through the pass. With the summer almost here, boaters will be hitting the water around Orange Beach in record numbers.
