The Louisiana Native Guard was stationed at Ship Island and one of the first Black regiments to serve in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Established in 1862, the unit was initially composed of free men of color from New Orleans. These men, mostly of mixed African, French, Spanish, and Native American descent, had a long history of military service dating back to the colonial era.

Despite facing racial discrimination and skepticism from both Union and Confederate forces, the Louisiana Native Guard demonstrated exceptional courage and dedication. They played a crucial role in various campaigns, including the Siege of Port Hudson. This engagement marked one of the first times that African American soldiers participated in a major assault during the war.

The formation of the Louisiana Native Guard was a significant milestone in the struggle for African American rights and recognition. Their service helped pave the way for the enlistment of nearly 180,000 Black soldiers in the Union Army by the end of the war, contributing significantly to the Union's victory and the eventual abolition of slavery.

Throughout their service, members of the Louisiana Native Guard challenged prevailing stereotypes and fought for equality, both on the battlefield and in society. Their legacy is a testament to their bravery and a reminder of the ongoing fight for civil rights and justice.
