My second charter today was with Stacy & Doug from the Baton Rouge area. They are visiting the Mississippi Gulf Coast to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Stacy had talked about her desire to try some sailing and today was the day. The weather was pretty hot but once we got out of the marina it was much nicer. The winds were up so the sailing was pretty fast. We sailed out towards Cat Island passing up another sailboat and a couple of barges. We did see a couple of dolphins but I was hoping we would have seen a few more. Just a bit too choppy to see the dolphins easily today. But still enjoyed sailing with two really nice folks. Great day to be on the water!

Been away on a 10-day sailing trip with some friends so been a minute or two since I did a charter. But back in the saddle again today. First up was Charles from Picayune. He sailed with me last year and is really itching to get a sailboat of his own. He has his eyes on a few that he might be going to see very soon. But in the meantime he wanted some more training. So we did a 4-hour charter today for him to get a bit more practice. Had some nice winds for a while as we sailed West...into the wind...with some tacking practice. But then when we turned around to sail back East for some downwind jibing the wind died. But only for about 30 minutes and then we were good to go again. Sailed into the big ship port to take a look at the ships and watch the Dole banana ship being unloaded. Plus lots of dolphins. Think I will be seeing Charles again pretty soon.

Kenneth & Kristy travelled to the Mississippi Gulf Coast from the Pensacola area for a get-away. And they booked a sunset sailing charter with me as part of their plan. They like being near and out on the water and they like being away from the more crowded boat trips. The weather cooperated pretty nice yesterday and by the time of their charter the temps and the humidity were pretty nice. There was a light breeze which allowed us to have some smooth seas and smooth sailing. Lots of birds out on the water today chasing fish. And we even saw one of the drones being towed back into the harbor. But the highlight of the trip had to be the many, many dolphins we saw. And so many of them swam right next to us. And we ended the trip with a nice sunset. Another great sailing charter with some really nice folks.

Felicia, Purvis, Laci, Chevonne, Steve and Esteban were scheduled to sail with me about 2 weeks ago. Some of them drove in from New Orleans and some from Picayune. However the weather turned on us at the last minute and I had to cancel. I was able to give them a tour of the boat. So they rescheduled for today and drove back. The weather looked to be good. But about an hour into the sunset charter a thunderstorm started building over North Gulfport/Biloxi but the forecast showed it to drift a bit to the East. But unbelievably the forecasters got it wrong...imagine that. The storm started drifting Southwest. And I saw some lightning in it. So unfortunately I had to make the decision to cut our trip short by about an hour. But we did see some dolphins. Just didn't really get to see any sunset. Super nice folks so hopefully they will come back and try again some day.

My second charter today was with David & his son Garrison from Covington, LA. Garrison just recently got confirmation of his acceptance in the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. And part of the training and experience he will get up there will be an introduction into sailing. David was a sailor a few years back but no longer has a boat so he brought him to North Star Sailing Charters so I could start introducing him to sailing. He did great and we all had a great time sailing in the Mississippi Sound. CONGRATULATIONS to Garrison and we wish you the best of luck at the Naval Academy!

Some great sailing weather today. First up was Jessica who bought a gift certificate last year to take her family and friends sailing this year. Today was the day. Jessica and her son Corey and her daughter Jackie along with friends Marcie, Tim and Kat drove in from New Orleans. Corey drove us out of the harbor and we got the sails up. Being a 4-hour charter I intially got us headed Southwest towards Cat Island. Right before we got to Cat we came across a shrimp boat with his nets out. Lots of birds and lots of dolphins around the shrimp boat. Then sailed back East towards the Ship Channel and sailed back North up the channel looking for dolphins. And we found LOTS. There was large group of maybe 15 - 20 dolphins swimming around together. A power boat was sitting there watching them and we snuck up behind them under sail. I do not think I have ever seen such a large grouping in the Mississippi Sound. Then a big ocean going vessel was headed into the port and they had a couple of dolphins swimming and jumping in the bow wave. Lots of dolphins and peaceful sailing with family and friends. Doesn't get much better.

Daniel booked a charter with me to celebrate Mary's birthday last year. But on their way to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Reid got sick so they had to cancel. They were rescheduled to come down and we had bad weather. But the third time is the charm. Daniel, Mary, Reid and Lucy drove down to the Coast this weekend from Madison. The weather was very nice so we all went sailing. Mary & Reid both took turns at the wheel as we drove out of the harbor and got the sails up. We tacked our way towards Cat Island before we finally sailed downwind back to the harbor in the Gulfport Ship Channel. We saw a lot of dolphins and couple of tugs pushing several barges. The sunset was partially blocked by some clouds low down by the horizon but it was a very trip with a very nice family.

My second charter yesterday was a sunset charter with Jan & Jim from Hattiesburg along with their grandson CJ. Jan & Jim have sailed with North Star Sailing Charters a few times before but over 14 years ago when Capt. Roger owned and operated the business. But as far as I am concerned they are repeat customers. Still cloudy but no rain. Had some nice wind for about 90 minutes before it died and we drifted along kind of slowly. Eventually we had to turn on the engine and motor back to the harbor. But while we were out there we watched a ship head into the State Port with dolphins playing in the bow wave. We saw a momma dolphin jump WAY out the water less than 50' from us with her baby swimming close by. And we saw lots of pelicans. But no sunset this evening due to the heavy clouds. Plus CJ steered the boat really well for a 1st grader. Don't think he was really watching where we were going but he would turn left/right when I asked him and then straighten up the rudder when I asked. In other words a perfect crew...does what the Captain asks with no comments or questions (hint hint to some of my "regular" crew...). Very nice family and a very nice sailing trip.

The weather has been an issue this weekend. I did have to cancel both charters scheduled for Saturday. But yesterday the rain held off and I was able to get both charters in. First up was Ruthanne and her son Knox from Arkansas. Ruthanne lived in Ocean Springs for a while a few years before Katrina. She wanted to come down and see how things have changed...and things have definitely changed. Had to delay her charter by one hour due to forecast rain (which didn't really happen) but we did get out on the water. Winds were light so the sailing was peaceful and the waters were very smooth. That made it easy for us to see several dolphins. Plus we got to see the very large US Navy ship docked over in the Gulfport State Port. Overall just a very peaceful and relaxing charter.

My second charter yesterday was with Debbie & Vern who normally live in Ohio but they recently acquired a second home in Diamondhead. Debbie went to High School in Picayune and Vern is originally from Lumberton and he went to USM in Hattiesburg (my Alma Mater). And they met at Pearl River Community College (or Junior College as it was called back in the day). So they have some roots in Mississippi...and now they have a condo in Mississippi. Anyways Vern has been dreaming of learning to sail, getting a boat of his own, and sailing off to distant (but tropical) shores in the Caribbean so Debbie decided to surprise him with a 4-hour sailing charter today. He had no idea until he showed up. We had some great sailing and lots of great questions (literally hundreds...I was counting) about sailing and sailboats. We sailed out to and along Cat Island. We found a lot of dolphins. And we got "buzzed" by a C-22 Osprey that was flying out of Gulfport...very cool. A great sailing charter with two very fun people. I am sure I will see them again now that they have a place down here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
