The City of Gulfport currently installed 10 Mini Reef Systems at the Williams Pier. These new habitat features are constructed of fiberglass, PVC pipe, polypropylene rope and crab-trap floats. The mini-reefs function much like the mangrove systems that originally lined Florida’s coast, providing places for filter-feeders to attach and small fish to hide. The small fish, in turn, attract larger fish. Filter-feeders like sea squirts move in shortly after the systems are installed; in three years the habitats reach peak efficiency with oysters and other filter feeders. One of the most critical elements of the habitat is that they do not interfere with boats, so they’re located under existing docks rather than creating obstacles.

• A Mini Reef can contain 150,000 animals from over 350 different species.
• A Mini Reef can clean on average 30,000 gallons of seawater everyday.
• 65 different species of fish have been found using Mini Reefs as home.
• Mini Reefs can raise over 60 stone crabs or blue crabs per year.
• Mini Reefs can raise over 50 spiny lobsters per year.
• The Mini Reef is built of materials that will last decades in a saltwater.
• 99.972% of Mini Reefs survived hurricane Irma without damage.
• Mini Reefs can now be found in 22 cities around the state.
