Autumn colors + world-class waters! 🎣The rivers + lakes in the Gunnison Valley come alive as the leaves change.

Cast a line into Gold Medal trout waters on the Gunnison and Taylor rivers. Hook rainbows, browns and cutthroats surrounded by scenic views of golden aspen trees. Or come for the Kokanee Salmon run as they make their way upstream from the Blue Mesa to their spawning grounds near Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery on the East River.

Pro tip: Hire a guide! The outfitters here know the nuances of how the river and weather changes day to day and with a county as big as Gunnison, it helps to have a local show you the best spots to be the most successful!

Check in with Colorado Parks and Wildlife for info on getting a fishing license + to check for any restrictions due to water levels or temperatures.

Be Bear Aware during your visit. 🐻

Bear activity across the Gunnison Valley has been at an all time high this summer, and we expect it to continue as we move into fall as they forage before hibernation. Unfortunately that sometimes means turning to human food sources, such as trash cans, campsites, and even car + home break-ins.

Tips to stay aware on your visit and on the trails:
• Lock your cars + your home.
• Never leave food outside.
• Secure all trash.
• Use bear-proof containers for food + scented items while camping / picnicking.
• Hike in groups of three or more, make noise, stay on the trail, and consider carrying bear spray.

It’s been a busy summer here in the Gunnison Valley! And that means the trails have been experiencing a lot of traffic from hikers, bikers, and horses.

Here are some tips to help keep trails accessible, beautiful, and in good shape by using them with minimal impact.

• Ride to or carpool to trailheads rather than shuttling.

• Pick up dog 💩 and dispose of correctly. You may need to carry it on the trail a ways until you find an appropriate receptacle.

• Know who has the right of way. Yield to uphill traffic. Bikers yield to hikers + horses.

• Stay on the trail + go THROUGH mud and rocks.

• Pay attention to signage + know before you hit the trail.
