I had the pleasure to share my boat with Ellyece Hammer and Steve Dylan last night. Ellyece booked this trip back in February as a birthday gift to herself. Her goal, to catch a Sturgeon, a big Sturgeon. I advised her that Late July was not the best time to pursue sturgeon but that we would certainly give it a go. I'll get back to the fishing in a minute.
Elleyce had a whole day planned. She had lived in the Red Wing area at one point and was excited to come back down and hit some old haunts. Their day started with a burger at King's Place, a visit to Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop and a quick pit stop to see Brad at the Harbor Bar. Sounds like a great tour of the Red Wing area to me. Now let's talk fishing...
As is typical this time of year, we had very little action until sunset. Even then it was a grind. I moved and I moved and I moved with only a couple small Sturgeon to show for it. The river was dead, no fish jumping, no bait, it was earily quiet. On the way out I had checked an area that showed promise. It was in the main channel so I needed to let the boat traffic settle down before I could set up on it. We anchored and got lines in the water about 11 p.m.
Finally, the prehistoric beasts were breaching and jumping all around us. Some hope was found at least but this was not translating into bites....yet.
Then it happened, the calm turned into chaos, and for the next several minutes Ellyece hung on for dear life as a true river giant tried to break her. Not tonight Ole sucker lips, Elleyce is strong and will win this battle. After a long fight we slid a gorgeous specimen into the net. What happened next was unbelievable, deafening in fact. I have never had a client more excited to catch a fish than this. Luckily we were in the middle of nowhere because if not everyone within 3 miles would have been awake. 🤣🤣
A couple quick pictures and we sent this beautiful fish back on its way. Sometimes all it takes is one bite to make everything wonderful.
