🌿 Hawaiian Word of the Week: Koa (koh-ah)
Brave • Bold • Fearless

Not just a mood — Koa is also Hawaiʻi’s state tree 🌳, famous for its strength and beauty. Ancient Hawaiians crafted canoes, surfboards, and weapons from koa wood — basically, it was the OG gear for island adventures.

So this week, be koa: stand tall, face the waves, and go after life like you’ve got a one-way ticket to epic. 🔥

Meaning: “To seek, to explore, to go far.”

At Rappel Maui, every descent is more than just an adrenaline rush — it’s a chance to embody ʻimi loa. 🌊✨ This Hawaiian value reminds us to approach life with curiosity, to venture beyond the familiar, and to see challenges as invitations to grow.

So here’s to going beyond comfort zones and chasing the wild beauty of Maui, one rappel at a time. 🌿🪢

What’s Red, Juicy, and Grows on the Edge of a Waterfall?
Meet the ʻŌhiʻa ʻAi—Hawai‘i’s mountain apple!

August is the sweet spot for adventures with Rappel Maui: fewer crowds, sunny skies, and a surprise on the trail—wild, ripe ʻŌhiʻa ʻAi fruit! Our guides may point them out as you hike through the rainforest, along with passion fruit vines (lilikoi, anyone?).

Brought by Polynesian voyagers, this ancient canoe plant isn’t just a tasty treat. Its tree is tied to Hawaiian culture, medicine, and even the goddess Pele—symbolizing strength and balance. Just like rappelling with us: part thrill, part tranquility.

Rappel Maui: The One and Only

Beautiful sandy beaches, spectacular views of both the Haleakala Crater and the Pacific Ocean, tropical rainforests, colorful coral and delicious homegrown foods: This is Maui. If you’ve ever wondered why Conde Nast Traveler readers voted Maui one of the top 25 islands in the world for 20 years in a row, and voted it number one of the Top 10 Islands in the United States, you have only to make your first visit to understand what all the fuss is about.

And now that you’re in one of the world’s most remote places--and one of its most beloved--what will you do? What will you see? If you want to see and do it all, you haven’t fulfilled your mission until you’ve rappelled down a secret waterfall in an off-the-beaten-path rainforest valley on the also much-touted Road to Hana. If you don’t know what rappelling is, or if you have yet to try this quickly-growing outdoor adventure sport, you’re in good company. We’ll show you the ropes.

Rappelling is part of the sport of canyoneering, and is the method by which mere mortals can travel terrain that would be otherwise very difficult or impossible to safely cross or descend. Where do these feats happen? In a magical, acres-wide tropical garden featuring some of Hawaii’s most unique and revered botanical and wildlife that’s fed by the island’s natural stream flow. You ride to this secluded, private activity site in the comfort of a 15-passenger van driven by guides knowledgeable about the island’s history and customs. All your gear, including shoes, is provided, along with bottled water, snacks and lunch. And there’s only one way to find a professionally guided rappelling operation on the island: Rappel Maui.

Here in this thrilling, recreational outdoor experience, you’ll learn the art and science of rappelling from your guides. There are two guides per group of eight participants, and their top priority is safety, both yours and the environment’s. Please visit our web site at RappelMaui.com to learn more about what makes this exciting activity a safe one. Like hiking and swimming, too? You’ll get to know the forest through all the senses during this full day tour--its sounds, sights, flavors, scents and textures embue visitors’ memories of Maui for a lifetime.
