🐔🌾 A LITTLE FERMENTATION GOES A LONG WAY AT ALWAYS FAITHFUL FARMSTEAD! 🌾🐔
Here at Always Faithful Farmstead, we’re always looking for simple, natural ways to care for our laying hens and keep our flock healthy!
One of the things we do is ferment our chicken scratch grains before feeding them to our girls. It’s a simple, old-fashioned practice that can be a great addition to a backyard or homestead chicken routine. 🇺🇸🐓
🌾 How do we ferment our grains?
1️⃣ We place our chicken scratch grains in 5 different containers.
2️⃣ We add enough clean, chlorine-free water to fully cover the grains.
3️⃣ We allow the grains to soak and ferment for a few days, checking them daily and stirring as needed.
4️⃣ Once properly fermented, we drain off the excess liquid and feed the grains fresh to our flock.
We monitor the fermentation closely, and discard anything that develops fuzzy mold, unusual discoloration, or a rotten smell.
🥚 Why do we ferment our chicken grains?
✅ Supports digestion: Fermentation can help break down some components of the grains and may make certain nutrients more available.
✅ Encourages beneficial microbes: Proper fermentation can promote helpful bacteria.
✅ Reduces waste: The hens often enjoy the softer, moister grains, helping us make feeding time a little more enjoyable.
✅ Adds variety to their diet: Fermented grains provide a different texture and feeding experience for our flock.
🐣 One important thing to remember: Fermented scratch is a supplement, not a complete diet. Our laying hens still need a balanced layer feed with the proper protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals to support healthy hens and strong eggshells.
At Always Faithful Farmstead, we believe in doing things the practical, hands-on way, making the most of what we have, and giving our animals the best care we can. We’re building our little farm one day at a time, and every small improvement matters! ❤️🌱
