Today, our town celebrates the birthday of inventor Glenn Hammond Curtiss and the school encouraged students to dress like him 🙂

If you never heard of Glenn Curtiss, below is some fascinating information about his time in history.

Born May 21, 1878 in his lifetime he was considered 'The fastest man on Earth' clocking a speed of 218mph riding a motorcycle that he invented. After, he focused more on avionics.

Hammondsport, NY is often referred to as the "Cradle of Aviation" because it was the location where Glenn Curtiss developed and tested his early aircraft, including seaplanes, and established the first flying school in America. While Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, is considered the birthplace of aviation due to the Wright brothers' first successful flight, Hammondsport is where Curtiss's aviation innovations truly flourished.

Glenn Curtiss's Early Work:
Glenn Curtiss, born in Hammondsport, was a pioneer in aviation, known for his work with early seaplanes and his contributions to naval aviation.

Keuka Lake's Role:
Keuka Lake were ideal for Curtiss to develop and test his seaplanes, and in winter, the frozen surface served as a runway.

The Aerial Experiment Association (AEA):
Curtiss was a key member of the AEA, which included Alexander Graham Bell and others, and the group's "Red Wing" plane, designed by Curtiss, was the first successful aircraft to fly in America.

First Flying School:
Curtiss established the first flying school in America in Hammondsport in 1911, where he taught pilots and introduced the world to the "flying boat"

Glenn H. Curtiss Museum:
The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, located in Hammondsport, showcases Curtiss's innovations and the history of aviation in the area and many other inventions that Glenn Curtiss brought into the world.
