🌲🛶 4 Days on the Penobscot River! 🛶🌲

What an incredible adventure! Skyline Maine Adventures had the opportunity to take a great group of high school students on a four-day canoe trip down the Penobscot River.

Four days of paddling, camping, teamwork, learning new skills, and experiencing Maine’s outdoors the way it’s meant to be experienced. These students worked together, pushed through challenges, made some great memories, and got a chance to unplug and enjoy everything the Penobscot has to offer.

Trips like this are about more than just canoeing—they’re about confidence, teamwork, leadership, and adventure.

A big thank-you to the students and everyone who helped make this trip possible. We’re proud to have been part of an experience they’ll remember for years to come!

What's coming down the river?!

It's the Schooner Harvey Gamage!

This beautiful 131-foot tall ship is making a rare journey up the Penobscot River, giving everyone along the waterfront a chance to step back in time and experience a piece of Maine's rich maritime history. Today she's sailing between Bucksport and Bangor as part of the Penobscot River celebrations.

If you're out paddling with Skyline Kayak, keep an eye on the horizon—you never know what incredible sights you'll see on the Penobscot!

The Harvey Gamage is one of Maine's most iconic tall ships. She was built in South Bristol, Maine, and launched in 1973 as a 131-foot gaff-rigged schooner designed specifically for sail training. Unlike many historic-looking ships that are museum pieces, the Harvey Gamage is an active educational vessel where students and volunteers learn traditional seamanship—raising sails, steering, navigation, and working together as a crew. She is one of only a handful of U.S. sail-training vessels licensed by the Coast Guard for that purpose.

Her trip up the Penobscot River is especially significant because large tall ships rarely make it this far upriver. This year's voyage is part of the 4-Port Loop Celebration, a week-long event (July 28–August 3) honoring both America's 250th anniversary and the Penobscot River's maritime heritage. The celebration highlights how the river once served as Maine's "interstate," carrying lumber, ice, shipbuilding materials, and commerce between inland communities and the coast.

Throughout the week, the riverfront communities of Bangor, Brewer, Bucksport, Castine, and Searsport are hosting events.
For those of us who love being on the Penobscot, seeing the Harvey Gamage under sail is a reminder that these waters have connected Maine communities for centuries.

THE POGIES ARE BACK! MY FAVORITE MINI SHARK FINS!

FUN FACT
These small fish play a huge role in Maine's ecosystem. They provide food for striped bass, bluefish, osprey, bald eagles, seals, and many other wildlife species.

Keep your eyes open and you might spot fish breaking the surface, or eagles and osprey diving for an easy dinner!

Have you seen the pogies this summer? Let us know where! 👇
