Hampton Bays fifth grade students took an exciting first step toward middle school by participating in an orientation before the start of the new school year. They visited their classrooms, toured the school and participated in a fun scavenger hunt that challenged them to locate important areas throughout the building. While students explored the school, parents and guardians learned more about the middle school, including school procedures, expectations, and what students and families can look forward to during the upcoming school year.

With the excitement of a new school year in the air, incoming pre-K and kindergarten students and their families recently participated in a meet-and-greet at Hampton Bays Elementary School. The annual event gave students an opportunity to meet their teachers, explore their new classrooms and become familiar with their school surroundings. Families also connected with principals and staff and dropped off school supplies.

Hampton Bays Elementary School students have been spending their summer reading, exploring and learning through a first-ever partnership between the school district and the Hampton Bays Public Library.

As part of the dinosaur-themed summer reading program, students in kindergarten through fifth grade can earn a variety of prizes by reading and logging books, graphic novels, comic books and magazines. The new program moves away from mandatory summer reading and aims to foster a genuine, lifelong love of libraries and reading through student choice, community support and the joy of discovery. The program also familiarizes families with programs and services offered at the library.

Already, about 150 summer school students have completed their summer reading through a new library class program as part of summer school. Additionally, the library reported a record number of summer reading registrations during a kickoff party on the last day of school.

“The main goal of the summer reading program is for students to enjoy reading what they love by reading more of the books that they ask for all year long,” said elementary school librarian Christina Piazza. “We want them to use the summer to freely explore reading on their own terms and enjoy all the fun learning opportunities that the public library has to offer.”

At the end of the summer, students will earn prizes through the library and additional awards provided by the Hampton Bays Elementary School PTA and local businesses. Hampton Coffee generously donated 400 free cookie vouchers, and Scotto’s Pizza and Gemelli Gelato contributed vouchers.

The creativity of Hampton Bays School District art students is now on display throughout the hamlet as part of the Hampton Bays Shellebration public art initiative, sponsored by the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce with support from PSEG Long Island and the Town of Southampton.

As part of the community-wide project, Hampton Bays students painted four of 17 three-foot-tall scallop shell sculptures that now adorn prominent locations throughout Hampton Bays. The remaining sculptures, featuring scenes that celebrate the hamlet's history, culture and waterfront, were designed and painted by local Hampton Bays artists.

The student-created shells are displayed at Hampton Bays Elementary School, Hampton Bays Middle School, the district office and Ponquogue Beach.
The sculptures were officially unveiled during a public celebration on July 6 at the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce office. The event featured a guided tour of the shell sculptures and a meet-and-greet with the artists who helped bring the project to life.

Two years in the making, the Shellebration initiative was created to celebrate the unique character of Hampton Bays through public art. Organizers selected the scallop shell as the project's symbol in recognition of the hamlet's longstanding connection to its waterfront and maritime heritage.
