🌊🐢 Honu Magic in Maui Waters
There’s something truly special about encountering a Hawaiian green sea turtle (honu) in the wild. This peaceful moment captures the quiet beauty of one of Maui’s most beloved ocean ambassadors as it glides just beneath the surface.
Honu have long been revered in Hawaiian culture as symbols of good luck, longevity, and safe navigation across the sea. In Maui, they’re commonly seen while snorkeling along the reefs, especially around areas like Makena, Wailea, and the South Shore. These gentle creatures are protected, and seeing one up close is always a memorable highlight of any trip.
Please remember to always keep a legal and respectful distance (at least 10 feet / 3 meters) from honu in the water. Never touch or chase them — this helps protect these amazing animals so future visitors can enjoy them too.
Have you been lucky enough to swim near a honu while snorkeling in Maui? Share your favorite sea turtle encounter in the comments! 👇

From atop White Hill (Pā Kaʻoao) in Haleakalā National Park, this view looks out over the winding summit road, the visitor overlook, and the observatory domes of Science City in the distance.
In the lower right, faint circular stone remains mark one of many pā built centuries ago for protection against the harsh winds and cold at nearly 10,000 feet. The summit area has long held deep cultural significance, and today it’s also home to world-class astronomical research thanks to its clear, high-altitude skies.

Have you ever hiked in Haleakalā National Park?

🏇 1959 Maui Rodeo – Pure Upcountry Action!
This fantastic vintage photo captures the dust, speed, and skill of a classic calf-roping run at a Maui rodeo in 1959. Two paniolo on horseback thunder across the dirt arena in hot pursuit, while spectators line the grassy hillside and classic cars from the era fill the background.
The Makawao Rodeo tradition was still young in 1959: it had only begun a few years earlier in 1956, organized by local ranching families and the newly formed Maui Roping Club. What started as a small gathering of paniolo quickly grew into one of Hawaii’s most beloved annual events, celebrating the island’s deep ranching heritage every Fourth of July weekend.
Hawaii’s paniolo culture stretches back more than 200 years, when Spanish vaqueros first arrived and taught Native Hawaiians the art of cattle handling. The Hawaiians quickly made the traditions their own: creating distinctive saddles, braided lariats, and a unique style of horsemanship that became legendary. By the 1950s, these rodeos were important community gatherings where ranch families from across the islands came together to compete, celebrate, and keep the cowboy way of life alive.
This single frame is a wonderful time capsule of Upcountry Maui’s ranching roots and the enduring aloha spirit of the paniolo.
Who else loves these glimpses into Hawaii’s cowboy history? Drop a comment if you’ve attended the modern Makawao Stampede or have family stories from the old rodeo days! 🤠🌺
