There are few places in Utah quite like Goblin Valley State Park.

Thousands of bizarre, mushroom-shaped hoodoos fill the landscape, creating an otherworldly maze of sandstone formations unlike almost anywhere else in the desert. Hidden among them is an equally unique feature: The Goblin’s Lair.

On our Half-Day Goblin’s Lair Canyoneering Adventure, you’ll hike and scramble through the Valley of the Goblins before rappelling 90 feet into the massive, cavernous chamber below. Natural skylights illuminate the lair, making it feel more like a cathedral in the desert.

It’s a one-of-a-kind way to experience one of Utah’s most unusual state parks—and no previous canyoneering experience is required.

If you have spent any amount of time in Southern Utah, then you have probably seen the black colored soil crust that is common in the region.

Biological soil crust, sometimes called cryptobiotic soil, is actually a living community made up of cyanobacteria, lichens, mosses, fungi, and other microorganisms. “Crypto” means hidden and “biotic” means life—a fitting name for an ecosystem that’s easy to overlook.

Cyanobacteria within the crust produce sticky filaments that bind loose soil particles together, creating the rough, hardened surface seen in these photos. These crusts help stabilize desert soils, reduce erosion from wind and water, retain moisture, and add nitrogen to the soil that can benefit surrounding plants.

In dry desert environments, these crusts can take decades—or even longer—to fully develop, while a single footprint can cause lasting damage.

So while we love playing in the dirt here at Get In The Wild, when you’re exploring the desert, remember to stay on established trails, slickrock, washes, and other durable surfaces whenever possible.

There’s a lot more life beneath your feet than you might think.

Sometimes getting everyone through a canyon takes a little creativity—and a lot of teamwork.

This human pyramid is a great example of the kind of partner-assist technique canyoneers can use to help a team negotiate obstacles without always relying on ropes. Learning how to evaluate problems, work together, and choose the right technique is a big part of becoming a capable canyon leader.

Our next 3-Day Technical Canyoneering/Canyon Leadership Course is coming up September 25–27, 2026 in Hanksville, Utah. The course covers beginner canyoneering skills including partner assists, anchors, rappelling, ascending, route finding, hazard recognition, self-rescue, group problem-solving, and more. No previous canyoneering experience is required.
