Step onto the ground where one of the Civil War’s most dramatic days unfolded at Gaines Mill Battlefield.

On June 27, 1862, more than 60,000 Confederate soldiers clashed with about 34,000 Union troops in the largest Confederate infantry assault of the war. After a brutal six hours of combat, the battle became Robert E. Lee’s first major victory of the war, deterring the Union forces from advancing on Richmond.

Today, you can walk a 1.5‑mile trail past artillery exhibits, read interpretive signs, and see the historic Watt House that stood near the center of the Union line, all preserved within Richmond National Battlefield Park.

The Tomato Trail is coming Summer 2027!

As recently reported, Hanover County Tourism was awarded a $20,000 grant by the Virginia Tourism Corporation to develop the Tomato Trail, an immersive experience that will celebrate Hanover's tomato heritage with new experiences for residents and visitors alike.

“The Tomato Trail is a fun and authentic way to showcase what makes Hanover County special,” said Tourism Director Rachel Smith. “This grant allows us to tell the story of Hanover, and our tomatoes, to a larger audience while supporting the farms, restaurants and small businesses that help define our community and visitor experience.”

The Tomato Trail is currently being developed. For questions or how to get involved, please email [email protected]

Would you have dinner and a show at the place that invented it? 🎭

Back in 1953, six young actors from New York bought Hanover Tavern and created America’s first dinner theater. Today, you can still sit down for a meal in one of the Tavern’s historic dining rooms and then walk just a few steps away to watch a play. While the format has evolved, the spirit of sharing food, laughter, and live performances under one roof has lived on.

This weekend, don’t miss the final showings of The Cottage from Chamberlayne Actors Theatre. If you’ve ever wanted to experience “dinner and a show,” there’s no better place than the Tavern that helped create the idea.
