CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES-THE SHIP THAT STARTED IT ALL :

The very first Carnival cruise ship, Mardi Gras, launched in 1972 and marked a new era in cruising by targeting a younger, more casual demographic. Originally built in 1961 as Empress of Canada for Canadian Pacific Steamships, she was purchased by Carnival’s founder, Ted Arison, who saw an opportunity to offer affordable and fun cruises, breaking away from the traditionally formal experience offered by other lines.

Mardi Gras embarked on her maiden voyage under Carnival on March 11, 1972. The voyage started with a bit of drama when Mardi Gras ran aground on a sandbar near Miami, requiring assistance to get free. Despite this rocky start, the incident garnered media attention and put Carnival on the map. The ship’s playful ambiance, with a strong focus on entertainment and a “Fun Ship” experience, resonated with a wide range of travelers. This concept of fun cruising was a refreshing departure from the formality typical in the cruise industry at that time and helped shape Carnival’s unique brand identity.

The Mardi Gras had a capacity for around 900 passengers and included basic amenities, along with lively lounges, bars, and a fun atmosphere that would later become synonymous with Carnival. Its success set the stage for Carnival to grow into one of the largest cruise lines in the world. The legacy of Mardi Gras has been honored in recent years with Carnival’s 2021 flagship, also named Mardi Gras, which features new innovations, including the first roller coaster at sea, yet retains the spirit of fun and accessibility that defined the original.
