The Magical City: George Morrison’s New York

Through May 31, 2026

Born in Chippewa City, a remote Native American village on the shore of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota, George Morrison (Wah-wah-ta-ga-nah-gah-boo and Gwe-ki-ge-nah-gah-boo, Grand Portage Chippewa, 1919–2000) overcame innumerable challenges—poverty, a life-threatening childhood illness, social isolation, racial and cultural barriers—to become a leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement, which he collaboratively defined both publicly and behind the scenes.

Morrison’s influence as an abstract expressionist painter began in 1943 when he traveled from rural Minnesota to New York City to study at the Art Students League on a scholarship. Immersing himself in the city’s vibrant cultural scenes, he studied painting and drawing, contributed to numerous exhibitions and publications, and openly challenged the mainstream art establishment of his generation.

In New York, Morrison formed meaningful connections with artists including Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Lois Dodd, and Louise Nevelson, among others. His deep appreciation for urban life—specifically, industrial landscapes, jazz, and literature—permanently shaped his artistic practice and imagery.

This exhibition explores how Morrison’s aesthetic inspiration and future trajectory drew from his love of New York, which he called a “Magical City.” Featuring 25 of his most important paintings and drawings from this early period, the exhibition culminates in his Horizon series. It also features rare archival materials that place Morrison at the heart of the Abstract Expressionist movement in 1940s and 1950s New York.

I WAS IMPRESSED!

I'm a native New Yorker, but when I go uptown I have to get my bearings. Ms. Johnson gives a tour that has history the Harlem with a combination of architecture and how the named streets relate to the numbered streets downtown. It's given at an even pace so you don't feel rushed. I'm going to go back for her other tours and contact her about doing a group tour next year!

The Silent Parade of 1917 stands as one of the earliest civil rights marches in the United States, marking a powerful moment in history when thousands of African Americans gathered in New York City to protest racial violence and discrimination. Wearing white, signifying peace and unity, 10,000 men, women, and children marched silently down Fifth Avenue. Their silence was louder than words, a bold statement against the injustices inflicted upon their communities, including horrific acts of lynching and segregation. ✊🏿

At Harlem-Opoly, we honor moments like the Silent Parade, celebrating the courage and unity of those who stood for change. 🎲 Ready to learn and play?

🎺 HARLEM JAZZ SERIES PRESENTS: JOSEPH DALEY 🎺

Join us on August 8, 2025, for an extraordinary evening with master composer and tuba virtuoso Joseph Daley at the Harlem Jazz Series! Born in Harlem and now celebrating over 55 years in music, Joseph returns to his roots for what promises to be an unforgettable performance.

After five decades as one of jazz's most sought-after sidemen, working alongside legends like Sam Rivers, Carla Bley, Gil Evans, Charlie Haden, Cecil Taylor, and Anthony Braxton, Joseph has emerged as one of contemporary music's most visionary composers and leaders. His groundbreaking work "The Seven Deadly Sins" featuring his Earth Tones Ensemble stunned critics and fans alike, drawing comparisons to immortals like Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington.

Whether performing with his large ensemble, his evocative Ebony Brass Quintet, his World-music influenced Rituals Ensemble, or in intimate solo contexts, Joseph's performances are marked by sheer musicality, deeply-hewn emotion, and jubilant innovation. Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience one of jazz's most extraordinary artists in the neighborhood where his musical journey began.

Mark your calendars and prepare to witness jazz history in the making. Harlem, we're coming home! 🏠🎵

We are thrilled to announce that the extraordinary Corey A. Wallace will grace the Harlem Jazz Series stage this summer! As one of today's most sought-after trombonists, Corey brings a rare combination of technical mastery, deep musical knowledge, and profound respect for the traditions of jazz.

Over his 15+ year career, Corey has performed with an incredible roster of artists spanning multiple genres. From jazz luminaries like Benny Golson, Esperanza Spalding, and Kamasi Washington to contemporary stars like Kelly Clarkson, Rick Ross, and Ms. Lauryn Hill, his versatility and musicianship have made him a first-call musician for artists across the musical spectrum.

As the leader of The Corey Wallace DUBtet, he has maintained a remarkable residency at Smalls Jazz Club for nearly a decade, showcasing his skills as a bandleader, composer, and arranger. His commitment to jazz education through his work with Jazz at Lincoln Center, Syracuse University, and KIPP schools demonstrates his dedication to passing on the rich traditions of this music to the next generation.
