Today, we honor Juneteenth, a powerful celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality.

Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and invites us to reflect, learn, and stand in solidarity.

Here in Harrisonburg, we recognize the rich contributions of Black residents past and present who continue to shape the cultural, artistic, and culinary heartbeat of our community.

Take time today to support Black-owned businesses, visit local cultural sites, and join community events that celebrate unity and progress.

Harrisonburg’s own Magpie Diner made it on USA TODAY’s 10 best roadside diners!

“Originally a tire service station back in the 1950s, Magpie Diner has taken on new life as a top destination for a lavish brunch. Dishes here go far beyond the scope of a typical breakfast restaurant, with options including mozzarella and mortadella breakfast biscuits, strawberry panzanella salad, and Southern poutine, which is loaded with crispy potatoes, sausage gravy, and a fried egg.”

Winners will be announced on Wednesday, May 14th at 12:00pm EDT.

On May 17 at 10 AM, a new Virginia state historical marker titled “Resilience Amid Resistance” will be unveiled in front of the Federal Courthouse at 116 North Main Street. This important marker commemorates the landmark legal battles that helped dismantle Massive Resistance and enforce school desegregation across the Commonwealth.

The event will feature remarks and firsthand accounts from several key figures in Virginia’s desegregation history:
✊ Betty Kilby, lead plaintiff in Kilby v. Warren County
✊ Alex-Zan, the youngest member of the “Charlottesville 12” in Allen v. Charlottesville
✊ Anne Holton, former Virginia Secretary of Education and current professor at George Mason University

📍 All are welcome to attend this moving tribute to the resilience and courage that shaped a more just educational system.
