At Berdine’s Five & Dime in Harrisville, West Virginia you’re standing in the oldest five and dime store anywhere in the US! Open since 1908, this little shop has been part of town life for more than a century, and walking inside still feels like stepping into another time. K.C. Berdine and his brother Lafayette first opened the business after coming to Harrisville from Pennsylvania, during the years when the town was coming down from a busy oil and gas boom. The store later moved into its current building in 1915, right in the Harrisville Historic District. Inside, the old oak floors, pressed tin ceiling, wooden counters, and packed shelves give the place its true old-store feel. You’ll find tin toys, Czech glass ornaments, gag gifts, sewing supplies, kerosene lamp parts, and other hard-to-find items tucked around the shop. The candy counter is a favorite stop, with classics like Slo Pokes and Black Jack gum still sold by the pound and weighed on an old scale. Berdine’s is family owned, cash only, and wonderfully simple, making it one of West Virginia’s best places to slow down, wander the aisles, and enjoy a real piece of small-town history.
