A Snapshot Wisconsin trail camera spotted this prickly little fella on the right following his mother around Vilas County. For over a decade, this volunteer project has been collecting wildlife photos that are then analyzed, helping inform management decisions.

Female porcupines give birth to a single offspring, usually in the month of May. Mom will remain in close contact with the porcupette for the first six weeks to provide the little one with food. After that, the young follow their mothers around, gradually increasing separation until about mid-October when they go their separate ways.

Porcupines are solitary for most of their lives, although they will sometimes share winter dens or forage in groups in colder months.
