🌊 At the southeastern tip of Oahu, the Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail offers some of the island’s most expansive ocean views.

The paved trail climbs along sea cliffs overlooking the Kaiwi Channel, leading to panoramic views of the historic Makapuʻu Lighthouse and the rugged coastline below. During the winter months, it’s also one of the best spots on Oahu for whale watching, with humpback whales often visible offshore.

It’s a relatively short walk with a big reward at the top.

🏯 Nestled beneath the Koʻolau Mountains, the Byodo-In Temple feels worlds away from the busy side of Oʻahu.

Located in Kāneʻohe’s Valley of the Temples, this non-practicing Buddhist temple was built in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants arriving in Hawaiʻi. It’s a smaller-scale replica of the historic Byōdō-in Temple in Uji, Japan, surrounded by koi ponds, gardens, and towering green cliffs.

It’s one of the most peaceful and visually striking cultural stops on the island.
