Off the grid on the Coburg Peninsula, days move differently. No roads in, no roads out, just a boutique camp overlooking the water, with the Top End's wilderness stretching in the other direction.

A recent client travelled to the Northern Territory after a Fiji cruise, camping with Venture North Safaris and exploring Kakadu National Park along the way. Today marks a quieter milestone in Middle-earth history.

While the much anticipated 25th anniversary of the film premiere is coming later this year, on July 29, 1954, J.R.R. Tolkien's π˜›π˜©π˜¦ 𝘍𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴𝘩π˜ͺ𝘱 𝘰𝘧 𝘡𝘩𝘦 π˜™π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 was first published, introducing readers to a world that would later inspire one of cinema's most beloved trilogies.

Tolkien imagined Middle-earth from an Oxford study, but decades later Peter Jackson found its landscapes in New Zealand. The deep valleys of Fiordland, the volcanic slopes of Tongariro National Park, and countless other corners of the country gave shape to places readers had pictured for generations.

Seventy-two years later, you can step into the landscapes that brought Middle-earth to life on the silver screen. The rolling hills pictured here are Hobbiton in Matamata, where the Shire was brought to life on New Zealand's North Island.
