Dear friends,
It’s with great sadness that we are moving away from Russia. When we left St. Pete a few months ago, we were hoping that we could return but it soon became obvious that returning wasn’t an option for us. Even though we are relocating to the States, my heart is still captured by beautiful St. Petersburg and we will certainly be back to visit whenever possible.

So what will happen to this account?
📝 It will continue! Although posting will not be as often as before.
📚 The book club still meets monthly and is free to anyone who wants to learn more about Russia through reading. We meet at the end of the month to discuss what we read.
🗞 The Russo Files insider guide with St. Pete updates will be issued on a quarterly basis.
🗺 All in-person tours have come to a halt. However, the tours and experiences I crafted will be remade into digital format.

There’s still a lot to figure out but I have enjoyed sharing my St. Pete love with you all over the years. Thank you for being a part of my journey 💕

In honor of the upcoming Women’s Day, SAFS Book of the Month is Kremlin Wives by Larissa Vasilieva.

Join us for a discussion on what’s sure to be a fascinating read written by one of Russia’s most memorable feminists. If you’re interested in joining the Zoom discussion on Thursday, March 31st, send a message and I’ll add you to the chat.

“For over 70 yrs the Kremlin was a bastion of all-powerful Soviet rulers…A great deal is known about the men who held the fates of millions in their iron grip, yet little is known about the women who shared their lives. Shrouded in secrecy, the wives and mistresses of the Soviet power elite lived out their lives in wildly different ways: took part in the Revolution and it’s aftermath, bore children, suffered abuse; they were arrested and sent to Siberia, driven to su***de and even murdered.”

The Kremlin Wives can be found on Amazon and Kindle.

The great thing about the Challengers is that you can save them and do them at any time!

These are just recommendations of when these things might be best experienced and seasonally appropriate.

Most of this month I have been sick, traveling and recovering from all of that so I am a bit behind. Without further ado, here are my top recommendations for what to do in St. Petersburg in February. The month isn’t over yet!

Full lists and links can be found in the next issue of The Russo Files. I will be combining the February and March issue into one this time and both challenger recommendations will be listed there.

Save this post and find the challenger in stories or highlights to check off as you go along.

Going East is harder than going West

When you fly East you lose time which is why it can be so difficult to overcome jet lag. This is especially true for those of you who are traveling from the USA as jet lag occurs when crossing 3 or more time zones.

Swipe right for some tips on how to overcome the travel disease.

6 Things to Experience in St. Pete this month

1. Visit the Aurora Cruiser
On November 7, 1917 (October 25 OS) a blank was fired from the cruiser signaling the storming of the Winter Palace and marking the beginning of the October Revolution.

2. Watch the Kalashnikov Movie
It's the birth month of 'the world's deadliest inventor', here's a film about the making of the AK-47 and the gunsmith behind it.

3. Visit a Dostoevsky Exhibition or Museum
Pay homage to the life of one of Russia's greatest authors (born in November) with a visit to an exhibition or his home museum in St. Petersburg. Check out or the temporary Dostoevsky exhibition.

4. Tour St. Petersburg's Underground Palaces
In November 1955, St. Pete's best form of public transport left the station for the first time. Explore the palaces built for the common folk and the daily life of the Russians in a tour of the underground.

5. Try Sbiten - the Russian Honey Drink
The perfect mix for cooler temps and the holiday season. Find it at Vkusville or Teremok.

6. Get Lit at the Stray Dog Cafe
This is where the artistic and literary life of St. Petersburg flourished in the Silver Age.

101 cannon shots rang out from the Peter and Paul Fortress for the birth of a daughter and 301 for a son.

🔸During the reign of the last Romanov, there was a great disappointment that settled over the city as time and again the 102 cannon fire didn’t come. Finally, the heir was born and the whole city celebrated. Helen Rappaport’s Four Sisters (also known as The Romanov Sisters) offers in-depth insight into the secluded lives of the overshadowed daughters of the last Tsar.

🔸We recommend reading this biographical work as a follow up after having learned more about the general lives of Nicholas II and family. For fans of the last Romanov, this is a great book to read before visiting their former residence - the newly opened Alexander Palace.

QR Codes and Lockdown

ℹ️From now until November 7th St. Petersburg has entered a partial lockdown. Shopping is limited to only essential goods and cafes and restaurants have entered into a takeaway or delivery regime. Theaters and museums are still open but with QR codes or proof of accepted vaccines such as Sputnik V and Sputnik Light.

💉Foreigners without the recognized vaccine in Russia (Sputnik V or Sputnik Light) will not be permitted to enter the aforementioned establishments during this time. PCR tests are not accepted.

💉Those who have the Russian-recognized vaccine will be required to show proof of vaccination via either QR code or certificate of vaccination.

💉Foreigners are currently allowed only Sputnik Light vaccination. We recommend consulting any of the international medical clinics in the city should you want to get the vaccine.

ℹ️From November 1 - 3 St. Petersburg employees are required to work from home where applicable.

⚠️New mask rules have been announced: folks wearing masks that fall below the nose may receive a fine of 4000₽ and 5000₽ for repeat offenders.
