Money questions come up often,as departure dates draw closer.
Here are a few tips and tricks!
Money Matters Made Simple: Currency, Safety, & Smart Spending Tips!
A few key things to know before travel:
•Exchange a small amount of currency at home for peace of mind, but ATMs abroad ( other than the airport) usually offer better rates. Fewer, planned withdrawals help minimize fees.
•Call banks and credit card companies before travel to avoid frozen cards and foreign transaction fees- take a credit card with a larger balance for emergencies, but use the card that offers no or nominal fees for purchases abroad. Try to use a card that earns you cash back or rewards for travel related purchases.
•When asked “Pay in USD or local currency?” always choose local currency. You get a better exchange rate this way.
•Credit cards are great, but carry some cash and split it up for safety. Smaller bills and coins are especially useful for tips, cafés, and restrooms.
•Gratuities are not included and giving in local currency is recommended. So budgeting ahead is important. As a general guideline, Collette suggests about $10 per person per day for Tour Managers on Classic tours, $12 per person per day on Explorations, $5 per day on Classics and $7 per day on Explorations for motor coach drivers.
•Tips for local guides are included on ALL travel styles beginning in 2027. Until then $3 per guide is recommended.
•Use secure ATMs, RFID wallets, and avoid public Wi‑Fi for banking.
Smart money habits mean fewer headaches and more room to enjoy the experience. Money practices can vary by destination, so always review itinerary‑specific details.
