There's been a ton of noise around air traffic control recently.

The U.S. Department of Transportation just revealed a comprehensive plan to modernize the nation’s air traffic control (ATC) system. This overhaul is a response to the critical need for more efficient, resilient, and climate-friendly aviation infrastructure.

Why it matters?

- Air travel is rapidly approaching pre-pandemic levels, pushing the limits of an aging ATC system.

- Airlines face mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions and fuel costs. Streamlined routes and better flight path management can significantly cut both.

- Increasing cyber threats and unpredictable weather demand more robust, secure, and adaptive air traffic systems.

The upgrades?

- Replacing legacy radar systems with cutting-edge digital tools for real-time data sharing.

- Faster, clearer, and more reliable data links for pilots and air traffic controllers.

- Building systems that can withstand extreme weather, cyberattacks, and other disruptions.

Upgrades are much needed - especially with all the accidents we've been seeing recently.

Let's see when they'll take effect.

Fan of airline lounges but tired of annual spending thresholds or loyalty hoops?

Here's the most overlooked strategy in the game.

It’s a niche move - one that even many points pros miss - but it gets you permanent access to American Airlines Flagship Lounges and oneworld Sapphire status… without setting foot on a plane.

The strategy?

Apply for the Citi AAdvantage Executive Card - this card comes with Admirals Club access as long as you’re a primary cardholder (currently $595/year).

Add authorized users for free - add up to 10 authorized users at no additional cost. Each one also gets Admirals Club access when flying American Airlines - a huge perk on its own.

Here’s the kicker - Citi reports these authorized user cards to the credit bureaus in the authorized user’s name.

Over time (usually 5 years+), if the authorized user keeps the card in good standing, American Airlines may start treating them as long-time Citi AAdvantage cardholders, making them eligible for lifetime elite status considerations - especially during promotions or account reviews.

Some users have successfully parlayed this into ongoing oneworld Sapphire status, which includes:

- access to Flagship Lounges on qualifying itineraries (even international partner flights)

- priority check-in, boarding, and baggage on all oneworld carriers

- free seat selection and preferred seating perks

Why it works?

Airlines (and banks) often reward loyalty and tenure - even when it’s through a co-branded card. Some long-term authorized users have reported that AA sees them as cardholders with long-standing credit history and treats them accordingly during manual status assessments, especially when paired with occasional paid tickets or minimal flying activity.

This isn't a guaranteed hack, but it has worked reliably for those who:

- maintain a spotless credit record with the card

- don’t churn the account or remove themselves as an AU

- leverage the card for AA purchases to show ecosystem loyalty

Who should try this?

- frequent travelers tired of requalifying for status every year

- business travelers who want to access lounges worldwide without jumping through mileage hoops

So has unveiled its new A321LR aircraft featuring a first-class suite.

It's certainly a significant enhancement in premium travel offerings. However, claims that this is the first instance of first class on a narrow-body aircraft have been challenged.

First class: two exclusive suites in a 1-1 layout, featuring sliding privacy doors, lie-flat beds, 20-inch 4K entertainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity, and wireless charging.

Business class: fourteen lie-flat seats in a 1-1 herringbone configuration, with17.3-inch 4K screens and similar connectivity features.

Economy class: 144 seats with 18.4-inch width, 13.3-inch 4K screens, USB charging, and enhanced ergonomics.

Additional amenities include Viasat high-speed Wi-Fi, Giorgio Armani loungewear, and comprehensive ground services such as chauffeur and concierge offerings.
...while Etihad promotes its A321LR first-class suite as a pioneering feature, historical precedents exist:

: operated Boeing 757s with a three-class configuration, including angled-flat first-class seats.

Airlines: introduced the A321T in 2014, featuring a first-class cabin with lie-flat seats in a 1-1 configuration.

These examples indicate that first-class offerings on narrow-body aircraft are not unprecedented.

Etihad's initiative aligns with its "Journey 2030" strategy, aiming to double its fleet size, triple passenger numbers, and expand its network by 16 new destinations in 2025.

While not a global first, it underscores the airline's commitment to elevating passenger experiences and redefining premium travel standards.

What do you think of the new aircraft? Changing airlines any time soon?

Something cool about ?

It just announced a new partnership with , marking a significant expansion of its Mileage Plan program. This collaboration allows Alaska Mileage Plan members to earn and redeem miles on PAL flights, providing enhanced access to Asia.

So what does this mean for you?

✈️ Expanded Route Access

Mileage Plan members can now book award flights on PAL's routes from major North American cities - including New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Seattle (SEA), Honolulu (HNL), Toronto (YYZ), and Vancouver (YVR) - to Manila and beyond.

💰 Award Pricing

Under Alaska's distance-based award chart, one-way business class awards between the U.S. mainland and Manila are expected to range from 75,000 miles (e.g., SEA-MNL) to 85,000 miles (e.g., LAX/JFK-MNL).

↔️ Enhanced Connectivity

This partnership offers Mileage Plan members new options to reach destinations in China, Australia, Southeast Asia, and other parts of Asia through PAL's extensive network.

This collaboration is particularly beneficial for travelers seeking award availability to Asia, as PAL's flights may offer more open award seats compared to other carriers.

While PAL's business class may not be the most luxurious, it provides a valuable option for those looking to utilize their Alaska miles for transpacific travel.

The partnership is set to go live in the coming months, with PAL flights becoming bookable through Alaska's website and mobile app. This development underscores Alaska Airlines' commitment to expanding its global partnerships beyond the oneworld alliance, offering its members increased flexibility and value in award travel.

05/01/2025

So recently updated its AAdvantage program, reducing the award ticket hold time from five days to just 24 hours for all bookings, regardless of how far in advance they're made.

So what changed?

Previously, AAdvantage members could hold award tickets for up to five days if booking at least 14 days before departure. Now, all award holds are limited to 24 hours, aligning with the policy for revenue tickets.

Holding an award ticket allows travelers to secure a seat while finalizing plans, coordinating with companions, or transferring points from credit card partners.

The reduction to a 24-hour hold period makes it more challenging to manage these logistics, especially for complex itineraries or international flights involving partner airlines.

While this change reduces flexibility, it's worth noting that American Airlines remains the only major U.S. carrier offering any award hold option.

Other airlines, like Delta and United, have eliminated award holds entirely or offer them only for a fee.

The five-day hold was a valuable tool for planning and coordinating travel. While the 24-hour hold is better than nothing, it requires quicker decision-making and may limit flexibility.

Nonetheless, American's continued offering of any hold option sets it apart from competitors.

Does this impact you?

This offer is available through June 30, 2025, providing a substantial opportunity for businesses with significant expenses to maximize rewards.

The Northeast Alliance between and is done for good.

After a lengthy legal battle and a federal court ruling that the deal was anti-competitive, talks to bring the partnership back are off the table.

What was the deal?

They teamed up in 2020 to share routes and revenue in NYC and Boston - basically trying to gang up on Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.

It gave travelers more flight options and elite status perks across both airlines. But the DOJ didn’t like the monopoly vibes, and a judge agreed.

Now?

American is suing JetBlue for over $1M 😬 and JetBlue is already flirting with new potential partners.

What’s this mean for flyers?

🛫 Fewer code-shared routes
💳 Less crossover between loyalty programs
👀 And more competition (hopefully) in key Northeast markets

Curious to see how this reshapes both airlines' next moves.
