Recently we celebrated 5 years of Island Mountain Guides- and we’re also turning the page on an important chapter.

After careful consideration, we have made the decision to close our waterfall rappelling operations at Kulaniapia Falls. Significant erosion due to the current hurricane season created major safety concerns, and we believe discontinuing operations is the right decision for the safety of our guests, guides, and team.

Kulaniapia has been an incredible part of our story. To everyone who joined us there over the years: mahalo nui loa for trusting us with your adventure and helping make these five years possible.

People always ask us: “how do you get the ropes back after?”

Unfortunately I can’t disclose that information in a public forum, but what I can tell you is if someone catches the rope end on the pull, everyone who sees it owes them a beer…

We don’t make these rules, it’s written into climbing tradition.

So make sure you keep an eye on what we’re up to at the end of the rappel if you want to learn the secrets of the trade..

A close up look at our Kulaniapia falls rappel route on a day we CANT go rappelling… thankfully, with the Kona low storm systems coming from the other side of the island, we didn’t have many days like this during this past rainy season.

***IMPORTANT NOTE***
This is not a video of current conditions. This video was filmed March 8th 2024, but gives a good idea how crazy things can get down at the bottom of the falls during high water.

Thankfully, days like this are few and far between, and the waterfall levels are safe for rappelling our normal route about 99% of the time.

We’ll see you on the ropes 🤙🧗🏻‍♀️
