Have you ever wondered how a sea turtle nest hatches?

The mother turtle will create a nice vase-shaped chamber and deposit her eggs. During the incubation period (1) the embryos will develop to reach full term. When they are fully developed, they will use their egg tooth to break the eggs shell. The fluid drains from the eggs and an air space is created (2). The hatchlings will straighten and slowly escape from their eggs (3). When they have all emerged from their eggs, they will ascent together (4). This will cause the ceiling to collapse and a nest depression will form (5). When the surface sand cools down (most of the time during the night), the first emergence occurs. Over several nights, additional groups will emerge from the nest (6).

All together they will run to the ocean and start their big adventure into the blue! 💙

Excited fan of sea turtles , Beth, took this picture of Sea Turtle Patrol observing this nesting female returning to the water. Sea Turtle Patrol had measured her, and used that turtle-friendly red light to check her flippers for tags. (All work conducted under SCDNR MTP permit 566) Remember that day last week when we had only 150 nests? Well, now the nest count on HHI is up to 181!!!
