A few things we didn't expect on the Steens Mountain Loop Road.

The aspen trees have messages carved into them — left by Basque shepherds, some dating back over a century. There's a glacial gorge half a mile deep. And somehow, tucked behind all of it, a lake cold enough to swim in at nearly 10,000 feet.

A shooting star over the high desert. đź’«

Harney County sits in one of the least light-polluted corners of the country. On a clear night, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye.

If stargazing is on your list, find a place to stay under these skies: https://thisisharney.com/camping-rvs/

People assume the desert is dry. The Alvord disagrees.

The playa shifts with the seasons — sometimes holding water that catches the light and mirrors the mountains behind it. It's one of those things you have to see for yourself.

The Donner und Blitzen River runs right at the base of Steens Mountain, and yes, that's really its name (German for "thunder and lightning"). It's catch-and-release water for rainbow and redband trout, artificial flies and lures only — not just the rule, but the reason this stretch still fishes this well.

If fly fishing's part of your Harney County trip, the Blitzen River Trailhead near Page Springs Campground is a solid place to start and you'll likely have plenty of the river to yourself.

Most people don't picture snow in July when they think of Eastern Oregon. At nearly 10,000 feet, Steens Mountain has its own idea of summer. Fish Lake sits just below the rim — cold, quiet, and surrounded by snowmelt well into the season.

There's more than one way to soak in Harney County. Some spots come with a fountain, a crowd, and kids splashing in the shallow end. Others are just a wooden deck, a couple of tubs, and open desert in every direction.

We put together a local's guide to help you find the right one for your trip: thisisharney.com/a-locals-guide-to-the-best-hot-springs-near-burns

A few kinds of horsepower.

In Harney County, you’ll see it in the motorcycles, horses, ranch rigs, old trucks, and everyday pieces of life that keep things moving across a big landscape.

These are the kinds of scenes that tell you a lot about a place without needing to turn them into a formal stop on the itinerary. Hay stacked by the barn, weather moving across the sky, gravel under tires, and plenty of room between one view and the next.

A good summer day in Harney County doesn’t have to be packed.

It can leave room for the unplanned — coffee before the drive, a stop in town, and a few discoveries you didn’t map out ahead of time.

Open high desert. Canyon terrain. Forest-lined climbs. Stream crossings. Cattle grates. Long backcountry roads.

That’s the Skull Gravel Grinder.

It’s a good glimpse of why riders make the trip to Oregon’s high desert.
