Cherry Blossom season in Washington, D.C. has begun! During this last trip I was once again able to see a bit more of the region that's off the usual tour schedule - the Go Go Music Museum in the neighborhood of Anacostia (considered the sound of D.C.); the tiny often overlooked Lock House on the Mall, once so important as so much of the city was filled with waterways; the Washington National Opera as it returns to its original home at Georgetown University; a very American exhibit at the often overlooked Smithsonian the Renwick Gallery. Hit me up if you're looking for anything new or different during your trip to D.C.!!

Fun fact about me... I HATE roller coasters. I'm the person who tells friends and family that I'll stay on the ground and take their photo. But while visiting family they took me to the Washington State Fair where one of the oldest roller coasters in the USA is still in service - the Classic Coaster built 1935. And so, knowing there is little chance I'd have the chance to visit the fair again, sometimes one just has to go out of their comfort zone and experience a bit of history!!

Already missing watching the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics and dreaming of making your own journey to the Olympics? Let me help you start your plan today!!

I know it may seem like it is something that could never been financially feasible or has to be planned too far in advance but it's really not! In 2022 I made a decision that I was going to attend the Paris Olympics and entered the ticket purchasing lottery. Then in 2023 when my opportunity to finally purchase tickets came up I decided the games I was interested in were too expensive. And how could I plan more than a year in advance, pay a bunch of money, and then perhaps not be able to go? Then in early 2024 I changed my mind and had the time of my life!!

The best part? I was able to combine attending Games with local culture - 3 museums, swimming in the English Channel, history in Normandie, kayaking in Lyon, an ancient castle, the Palace of Versailles, wine tasting, a burlesque show, delicious meals, and 9 different games across France.

Figuring out the logistics of various trains since the games weren't all held in Paris and then hotels and timing and baggage storage along with how to actually plan what Games I'd attend and how timing would work out may have all been the most overwhelming part... This where it can help to a professional traveler help you out!

Ways I saved money?

* I admittedly didn't go to any of the medal competitions. Mostly I attended early matches. It was still super cool just to be there and to experience the games and the energy!! Made my list of what I really wanted to see (women's boxing, women's football, women's basketball, and filled in the rest after booking those. Was able to take advantage of reselling one of the tickets I bought on the official resale app so I didn't lose money there.

* I didn't need to stay in fancy digs, just somewhere safe and clean. And guess what? That actually meant that I stayed in some really cool neighborhoods I hadn't thought to explore before!

* Grocery stores so I wasn't eating out for every meal.

* Traveled with just a an airline approved carryon rolling suitcase and backpack. This is when less is more!! Not only did it mean I could move around with ease it also meant I didn't have to pay baggage fees on the flights during this time when airlines are nickel and dimming us.

* I lucked out having some acquaintances in other parts of France and I recommend always contacting someone you haven't seen for a while and asking if a visit would be possible. Why not combine attending the Games with a visit??

Being that the Games are held in a difference country every year will make every experience different but if you need help sifting through all the noise in planning or want any more advise, send me a message!

Washington D.C. off the beaten path - but shouldn't be! Civil Rights activist Frederick Douglas' last house. An escaped enslaved man who mostly secretly taught himself to read and who committed his life to the fight for equal rights in the USA and elsewhere.

Purchased in a then white neighborhood through a loophole he found, moving to the D.C. area seemed to have provided him even more opportunity to provide influence.

But it's not just the history of Douglas' work, it's also the work of his wives, supporting him and the family at home.

Perhaps my favorite fact? That Douglas was known to lift weights every morning because he knew his work would put him in danger and there could be times he'd need to defend himself...

The neighborhood itself has become known as Anacostia, over the years developed into a Black working class neighborhood, is now having a renaissance, and itself is worth spending a day in enjoying the cafes, bookshops, a walking tour, and other museums!

Easy to access via the metro or a local bus (I've honestly come to love just how easy the bus system is to navigate in DC!).
