Holy cow, it’s been a while!
When I’m considering using a business and I go to their page and see they haven’t posted in months, I assume they’ve gone out of business….
I’m still here though!
Let me re-introduce myself and give you the back story.
Hi! I’m Kellie, a (young) 40 something mom of 2 teens who grew up in Worcester/rutland and now live in Holden where I’ve raised my kids for the last 14 years.
I always knew I wanted to work in the travel industry having worked at hotels in my early 20’s and after doing the Disney college program at 19 but with two small kids I didn’t want to work nights, weekends and holidays which is typical for the tourism industry.
I used a travel agent for my own Disney trip (12ish years ago) and decided this was something I could do, I joined an agency I trusted and stayed with them for 8 years. During that time I traveled a ton, made some amazing friends and got the wool pulled over my eyes….
It turned out all those fancy trips I “won” were being paid for out of my own and my coworkers commissions. Our agency owner took out hundreds of thousands of dollars in PPE loans during Covid to pay her “employees” but we weren’t employees we were 1099 contracted workers- that money was spent on personal items (and forgiven by the government) and when that ran out the owner started taking out super high interest loans, defaulting on them and dipping into our commissions to pay them, she attempted to get people to partner with her, lied about other agents who went on to open their own agency (that I am now with, and they are incredible!) and tore apart friendships with lies.
All of that left me with a bad taste in my mouth, I didn’t know who I could trust, my passion for travel started to die and I was bitter.
I had literally worked on some of these trips for 3+ years as some were booked in 2018 or 2019 to travel in 2020 then cancelled and rebooked because of COVID and I never saw a dime of their commissions.
As a travel agent you don’t get paid until after your clients travel and a lot of times you pay out money up front, we pay for our email addresses, our accounting software and more so I actually lost money during this time.
My clients never knew this was happening and I tried to provide them the same level of service as always but my passion just wasn’t there.
This week while in Aruba with my husband and daughter I had a dream about my old agency and its owner (who all together stole close to a million dollars from her contractors and the government) and I realized how much this still affects me but it’s time to move on.
By sharing this I’m here to let you know I’m back (I technically never left, but you know what I mean!) and I’m ready to give you my all once again.
We can’t change the past but we can learn from it and grow.
So here’s to a fresh start, more travel adventures, the clients who have stayed with me despite the ups and downs (that you likely didn’t know were happening!) and the clients and friends I haven’t met yet!
