The Atlantic reveals some intriguing places along Europe’s coastline.

Off Galicia, Playa de Rodas on the Cíes Islands surprises with white sand and clear turquoise water kept distinctly fresh by deep Atlantic currents. Nearby, the Rías Baixas and Rías Altas reach deep into the Galician landscape, their long, sheltered inlets reminiscent of Norway’s fjords.

Following the coast northwards into France, the Dune du Pilat rises above the Bay of Biscay, slowly shifting inland with the wind. At Mont-Saint-Michel, the sea shows its power, returning across the tidal flats with remarkable speed.

All the more striking, then, is the tranquillity on board as the sun slowly rises above the horizon and sinks into the sea at night. It is these contrasts that linger in the memory.

Along the Atlantic, history begins at the water’s edge.

In Cádiz, centuries of architecture meet within a single view. The Iglesia de Santa Cruz, the city’s Old Cathedral, rises close to the waterfront, while the dome and twin towers of the New Cathedral shape the skyline beyond.

Further north, La Rochelle still guards its historic harbour with the Tour de la Chaîne. Its name recalls the iron chain once drawn across the entrance at night, closing the port to passing ships.

In Porto, Ribeira climbs from the Douro in tiled façades and steep lanes. A quarter shaped by centuries of trade, departure and arrival.
