South Africa is one of the most layered and complex countries on earth. It is where some of the oldest evidence of human life has been found.

Culturally, it is unmatched. Twelve official languages, dozens of distinct ethnic traditions, Cape Malay cooking, Zulu ceremonies, Afrikaner braai culture, and township jazz all exist within the same borders.

Whether you’re exploring the storied streets of Soweto to understand the triumph over Apartheid or visiting the Garden Route for conservation-led marine tours, the country offers a perspective shift that few other places can match.

Lamu Town is Kenya’s oldest continually inhabited town and one of the original Swahili settlements along coastal East Africa.

The town is characterized by narrow streets and magnificent stone buildings with impressive carved doors, shaped by a unique fusion of Swahili, Arabic, Persian, Indian, and European building styles.

There are no vehicles on the island, and goods are still moved through the narrow twisted alleyways by donkey.

In 2001, Lamu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Welcome to Face of Africa, a series where we spotlight African Change makers.

Cherie Kihato is a Kenyan entrepreneur and the founder of Savannah Space, a luxury furniture and home décor brand based in Nairobi, Kenya.

She launched Savannah Space in 2018 as an online marketplace selling furniture and home décor crafted by locally sourced Nairobi artisans. She started small, working with a local carpenter in her community to design and manufacture unique, handcrafted furniture, and despite initial skepticism she faced as a woman in the industry, her passion and creativity quickly shone through.

Savannah Space now has a retail showroom in the Lavington Mall. She showcases the work of 15 local artisan companies, including mkeka weavers, soapstone carvers, seagrass basket weavers, woodworkers, welders, and rug weavers.

She is a vocal advocate for African luxury, arguing that Africa already had deep traditions of craftsmanship and art that met the standard of true luxury even before colonialism.

She’s an influential figure in Kenya’s entrepreneurship and creative industries space, particularly for young African women in business.

Ten years ago, Away to Africa began with a simple idea that the diaspora deserved more than just a tourist experience. They deserved a homecoming.

It started with a belief that Africa is not just a destination. It is a feeling. A reconnection. For so many in the diaspora, the continent exists as a place of longing known through stories, through culture, through the music that raised you and the food that reminds you of home. Away to Africa was built to bridge that distance.

Over the past decade, that vision has taken us across 20+ countries, through ancient landscapes, vibrant cities, coastal villages, and sacred spaces. We have seen strangers become family.

That is what ten years of diaspora homecoming looks like.
And yet, as proud as we are of how far we have come, we know this is only the beginning. There are stories still waiting to be told, connections still waiting to be made, and places that will change you in ways you cannot yet imagine.

We are going stronger in 2026, with more destinations, deeper experiences, and a community of travellers who understand exactly why this journey matters.
