Seventy miles beyond Key West, in the middle of the open Gulf, stands one of the most remote and haunting places in all of Florida, Fort Jefferson. 🏰 This immense six-sided brick fortress rises straight out of turquoise water on a tiny island in the Dry Tortugas, and it is one of the largest masonry structures in the Americas, built from more than 16 million bricks.

Construction began in 1846, and though it was never finished and never saw battle, the fort served as a military prison during and after the Civil War. ⚓ Its most famous prisoner was Dr. Samuel Mudd, imprisoned for setting the leg of John Wilkes Booth. Life here was brutally hard, marked by isolation, heat, and outbreaks of yellow fever, and the stories of the soldiers and prisoners who endured it have given the fort a reputation for lingering ghosts and unexplained sounds echoing through its empty archways.

Fort Jefferson today is the heart of Dry Tortugas National Park, reachable only by boat or seaplane, surrounded by some of the clearest water in the country. It is history at its most isolated and atmospheric. Would you make the journey out to this remote island fortress?
