🐑 Experience the journey behind your wool products! 🤗

New York’s natural fiber supply chain is a working ecosystem. Between May 1 and October 31, the NY Fiber Trail is a wonderful opportunity to experience most (if not all) of its parts!

• The farm: Everything begins with healthy sheep raised by New York farmers. Visit a Fiber Trail farm to meet the flock, learn about different breeds, and discover how wool is produced.

• The mill: The fleece is washed, carded, spun, and sometimes dyed at a regional fiber mill. Seeing this process in person changes how you’ll look at every skein of yarn.

• The maker: Local dyers, designers, and artisans transform yarn into something unique.

🧶Ever wonder where your yarn or farm products really come from?

If supporting local communities and making informed purchases matters to you, there are a few ways to learn more about the products you buy.

🐑 Look for programs like NYS Grown & Certified (NYS Grown & Certified ) which help identify agricultural products that meet New York State standards for quality and environmental stewardship.

🐑 Look for the Sweaters for Good signs to help you find local yarns.

🐑 Get to know producers who are members of organizations like the Empire Sheep Producers Association and the Hudson Valley Textile Project (Hudson Valley Textile Project ), who support New York’s sheep and wool industry.

🐑 And best of all—visit them!

The New York Fiber Trail gives you the opportunity to step beyond the label. Visit farms, mills, yarn shops, and fiber studios where you can meet the people behind the products, ask questions about how fibers are sourced and processed, and even see parts of the journey from fleece to finished skein or garment.

In a world moving beyond the speed of light, Farm to Fashion is an invitation for conscious, empathic, and experienced human beings to return to their roots as a way forward. Selected for the 25th Tribeca festival, directed by Oliver Halfin, the film stars Isabella Rossellini, Donna Karan, MIMI PROBER, and the Animals, Farmers, Mills, and Artisans of NY State.

Several NY Fiber Trail locations are accessible from the Metro-North Railroad, making it easy to explore farms, yarn shops, and fiber arts destinations from New York City or anywhere along the Hudson Line. These locations are in walkable downtowns or are a short taxi or rideshare from Metro-North stations.

🦙The llama fact you didn’t ask for (but need to know)🤩

Ever notice a llama chewing in a figure-eight motion?

That funny figure-eight jaw motion isn’t just entertaining to watch. It’s actually a sign of a healthy llama. Llamas are ruminants, which means they regurgitate partially digested food and chew it again in a process called “chewing cud.”

Their jaws move in a side-to-side, circular motion that helps break down tough plant fibers, allowing them to get the most nutrition from grasses and hay.

So the next time you spot an alpaca making funny faces and chewing in circles, know they’re just hard at work turning pasture into the fiber we love.

The 3 participants with the most stamps on their NY Fiber Trail Passports will win gift baskets (filled with gift cards, yarn, fiber, and more) valued at: $150 – most stamps, $100 – 2nd most stamps, and $50 – 3rd most stamps. In the event of a tie, the top winners will share equally in the value of the three gift baskets.

ANYONE who submits a Passport with stamps on it from locations in at least 3 regions will be entered in a drawing to win one of several great prizes – all donated by Trail locations!

Exciting news! ✨ Packages with passports and tote bags have been assembled and are on their way to NY Fiber Trail locations.

Many thanks to Annual Summit attendees who volunteered to deliver the packages, and to our employees who worked so hard to get them ready to be sent. We could not have done this without you! ♥️

The 2024 NY Fiber Trail season is over, and it's time to get your passports submitted!

You have until Nov. 15th to submit your passport to be entered to win a bunch of amazing prizes from participating businesses, OR if you're in the top 3 most-stamped passports you'll be entered to win a $300, $150 or $75 gift card to the NY Fiber Trail stop of your choice.
