Today, despite extensive public opposition and a recent ruling that the Mulchatna bear control program is unlawful, the Board of Game passed an emergency regulation to reopen bear control for 2025. As it currently stands, the aerial gunning of Mulchatna bears will recommence in May.

Despite this incredibly disheartening news, we were blown away by the level of support we received from the public, both in the Board of Game meeting and online. Over ten public testimonies were given (on short notice, over the weekend!), nearly 200 record copies were submitted, and this morning the Egan Center was full of bear supporters to witness the Board's deliberation.

We can’t thank you enough for your efforts and your support. We will continue advocating for Mulchatna bears and are evaluating our next steps forward. Please stay tuned for more information.

This is a very important ruling for the future of brown bears in the Katmai region and its surroundings. Superior Court of Alaska ruled in favor of AWA, finding that the Mulchatna Bear Control program—through which the State has aerially gunned nearly 200 brown bears—was unlawfully adopted.
Good work, AWA, and all others on the front lines of this fight.

Today is a historic day for Alaska’s bears! Judge Guidi of the Superior Court of Alaska ruled in favor of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, finding that the Mulchatna Bear Control program—in which the State has aerially gunned nearly 200 brown bears —was unlawfully adopted.

These three nuggets huddle together on a gravel bar while their mother moves up and down the channel, focused on fishing. They try to stay close, negotiating along the bank and crossing the creek. Once she has a fish, they eagerly approach and claim their share.
*Contrary to common assumptions, mother Brown Bears rarely bring food directly to their cubs. Generally, they need to claim their food from her and each other, which teaches them essential life skills.

A yearling brown bear fishes for sockeye salmon alongside its mother. Across the creek, another mother and her triplet yearlings rest and fish. The two families notice each other’s presence but continue peacefully with their own activities.
While cubs can be particularly curious about other bears, people, and any other creatures in their environment, the majority of the time, brown bears tend to practice conflict avoidance.
As guides, educators, and stewards of these bears and their environment, we strive to share insights into bear behavior and foster respect for these animals with all our guests.

Last night we were treated to an amazing evening sunset & bear viewing! It’s such a treat to be here when all is quiet. We only had to venture a short distance from our camp to find ourselves among upwards of 30 bears, many of them mothers with cubs. We were & are in our happy place!
Looking forward to introducing our incoming guests to these magical experiences!

Experiencing acceptance from the bears is truly remarkable, and it underscores the critical importance of a guide’s experience. Guides who have spent extensive time with the bears in these areas possess a deep understanding of their behavior, allowing them to assess each situation and determine the most appropriate actions—or inactions—to take. In this instance, remaining still and allowing the bear to choose her spot was precisely the right decision.
Every moment with wildlife is unique, and circumstances can shift rapidly. An experienced guide remains vigilant, always ready to adapt as the behavior of the bears and the dynamics of the environment change. This level of expertise ensures not only the safety of all involved but also a more enriching and respectful encounter with nature.

These sibling spring cubs will heavily depend on each other as they learn, grow, and explore their world. If they manage to beat the odds and survive their first year, they will likely remain closely bonded for several seasons as they transition from cubs to subadults. The lessons they learn from their mother, and from each other, will be crucial in preparing them for the complex and nuanced life of an adult Coastal Brown Bear.
