🇲🇽 Not all “Mexico beach vacations” are the same.

If you’re thinking Riviera Maya, this is your reminder: the area you choose matters just as much as the resort.

Cancún? Playa Mujeres? Riviera Cancún? Puerto Morelos? Playa del Carmen? Tulum? Cabo?

They’re all different!

A few quick examples:

📍 Costa Mujeres & Playa Mujeres
More remote, ultra-relaxing, and perfect if you plan to spend most of your time on property. Resorts here are beautiful, spread out, and typically low-rise (no more than 5 floors). These beaches also tend to see less sargassum, making them a strong pick for true beach lovers.

📍 Cancún Hotel Zone
Think iconic turquoise water and high-rise towers right on the sand with great views. It’s close to the airport and an easy jump-off point for tours and excursions. Just know: the water can be rough, with frequent red-flag days when swimming isn’t allowed.

📍 Riviera Cancún / Puerto Morelos
A bit quieter than Cancún, with a more local feel and a protected reef offshore. Great for travelers who want a balance of relaxation and easy access to both Cancún and Playa del Carmen.

📍 Playa del Carmen
Walkable, lively, and full of restaurants, shops, and nightlife along 5th Avenue. Beaches here can see more sargassum in season, but the location is ideal if you want to be in the middle of everything.

📍 Tulum
Boho-chic, boutique, and very Instagrammable—with jungle-meets-beach vibes. The coastline here is more exposed, so sargassum can be heavier, and many properties are smaller and less “resort-y.”

The right area depends on what you want your days to feel like:

Mostly on-property relaxation?

Easy excursions and tours?

Walkable town and nightlife?

Quiet, local, or boho-luxe?

Hey, I've been working on an itinerary for Positano and wanted to share why this destination is so unique and why it keeps showing up on my clients' wish lists.

Where is Positano?

Positano is a town on Italy's Amalfi Coast, built in tiers down a steep cliff to the shimmering Mediterranean. Think pastel houses, narrow lanes, and views that change with every turn. It's the kind of place that's perfect for travelers who love scenery, slow evenings, and unforgettable meals.

Wondering what to do in Positano?

Sunset boat ride along the coast is a MUST-DO! Private evening tours glide past the Li Galli islets and the coastline as the light turns golden. Ideal for those IG photos and that "wow" moment when the town lights up from the water.

Dinner at Il Tridente atop Hotel Poseidon. This terrace is one of Positano's most romantic—bougainvillea-draped, sea-facing, and perfect for sunset. The vibe is elegant but relaxed, with creative cocktails and Neapolitan-inspired dishes. Pro tip: staying at the hotel can help with early reservation opportunities.

Gelato… does this need any more explanation? It wouldn't be a trip to Italy without this region's delicacy. Wander the lanes, pick your flavors, and enjoy the moment.

Why does Positano feel so special????

Positano's magic is in its setting and pace. The town is compact but layered, with boutique shopping along Via dei Mulini, waterfront strolls at Spiaggia Grande, and cliffside dining that turns every meal into an event. It's a destination designed for lingering—long lunches, sunset sails, and evenings that end with cocktails under the stars.

***Important note on accessibility***

Positano is not very friendly for those with limited mobility. The town is built on steep tiers with lots of stairs and narrow lanes; there's no flat route through the core. The main beach requires descending many steps from the road (there's a small local bus, but it's tight). If mobility is a concern, the most practical approach is to arrive by boat to the beach level and keep plans to the waterfront and Piazza dei Mulini area, which are more manageable.
