The Iberian lynx was down to fewer than 100 animals in 2002, which made it the most endangered cat in the world. Today there are more than 2,000 across Spain and Portugal. They're rabbit specialists, with European rabbits making up most of their diet.

Komodo dragons are the largest living lizards on Earth, reaching up to 10 feet long and over 150 pounds. They live in the wild on only a handful of Indonesian islands, including Komodo, Rinca, and Flores. They're listed as Endangered, with only a few thousand left.

I spent several long nights in a hide near the Finland–Russia border waiting for bears. Around midnight, with the sun still up, two brown bears came out of the forest and started wrestling. They stood on their hind legs and pushed each other back and forth for several minutes, more play than fight. Those long nights in the hide were worth it.

I do love bears! How can you not? Who wants to join me next year?

Throwback to 2021. Pantanal.

Medrosa and a very tiny Rio. His first swim across the Cuiabá River.

He didn't make it on his own. He pressed in tight against Mom's face and let her do the work. Medrosa kept her head up and kept going.

Just two heads in the water, and one of them barely bigger than her muzzle.

Rio is gone now. This is how I want to remember him. Small, soaked, and holding on to Mom.

RIP Rio.

Jaguar kills are rare. Really rare.

What you're seeing here is years on the river. Many, many hours. Miles of searching. Long days of waiting. And a little luck.

I've always believed if you put in the time and the effort, nature rewards you. These moments are that reward.

No two hunts play out the same. Different cat, different prey, different approach. But the end is always quick.

That's what gets me every time. The strategy. The patience. The timing. Knowing exactly when to commit. Jaguars have the strongest bite relative to size of any big cat, and they often finish with a bite straight to the skull. No wasted motion.

Apex predator in every sense.

Every one of these is special. I don't take a single one for granted. Which is your favorite?

15mm. For wildlife.

Sounds wrong. Everyone reaches for the long glass. But going wide can give you a frame no telephoto will.

Get low. Get wide. Put the animal and its world in one shot.

The catch: you can't walk up to a lion with a 15mm. So how do you get the shot? Camera traps. Remotes. Even little RC cars. Part photography, part mad science.

Fair warning: the hit rate is low. 99 near-misses before the one that works. Worth it.

Leighton breaks it all down in an article he wrote here 👇

The Pantanal is home to one of the largest crocodilian populations on Earth, estimated in the millions. They were hunted hard for their skins in the '70s and '80s. Today the rivers are full of them again.

Sunset at Iguaçu. The sun dropped behind the treeline on the Argentine side and backlit the mist coming off the falls. Slowed the shutter down to smooth out the rapids in front. Shot from the Brazilian side until the light went.
