The “BB” designation in the US Navy stands simply for Battleship. The repetition of the letter was established in July 1920 to maintain a standard two-letter identification system while avoiding confusion or inappropriate acronyms.

“I graduated high school in 1998 and the USS Missouri showed up at Pearl Harbor. The floating bridge to Ford Island was under construction. The H-3 freeway was near completion. The Honorable Daniel K Inouye was our Senator. A lot of changes were happening across the state and I was headed to the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI. Who knew that 28 years later I’d be doing tours to the USS Missouri. Bringing the USS Missouri to Hawaii allows individuals the opportunity to learn about our past.”

Green sand beach on the Hawaii island also known as the Big Island. Did you know that Kamehameha the Great’s clan were called the Hawaiians? Kamehameha united the islands, and all those with aboriginal blood under one rule were referred to as Hawaiians. Although many people throughout Hawaii resisted becoming a part of the Hawaiians for their dislike of kamehameha the great. Eight kings and queens ruled Hawaii for a little over a hundred years, then an overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. Massive changes throughout Hawaii in a short amount of time. The population of native Hawaiians went from a conservative estimate of 300,000 Hawaiians to approximately 17,000 pure Hawaiians by the 1880s due to diseases such as the common cold and etc. The introduction of Christianity along with a purposeful whitewashing of native culture steered the natives to focus on surviving in a new environment. Forced off their lands to seek employment, only to find their homes and lands acquired by individuals through adverse possession. Natives that had land sold it in a blind acceptance of capitalism. For example sold a couple thousand acres to purchase a vehicle, only to be killed in a car accident. Overtime natives adjusted to the new landscape and found ways to flourish. Effectively gaining more time to focus on other things such as education, government, business, and etc. Over 200 years later and a Native language on the brink of extinction, the natives of Hawaii unite. This time not under one rule or one king, but under one cause and one people. The natives of Hawaii uniting as Hawaiians. The resistance of being called a Hawaiian becomes soft vibrations that intensifies as identity of native individuals roots come to light.

One of our favorite hikes! The kuliouou ridge hike is about 4.5 miles depending on where you park. We recommend parking at one of the community parks out of respect for the residents that live in the area. This adds another mile or two to the hike, but it keeps parking open to people that live in the neighborhood. It’s about 1800 feet to the top. Because of the elevation, it feels like you just did 8 miles. It takes 3-4 hours to get to the top. Start at 3 am and watch one of the most amazing sunrises.
