Today was supposed to be our visit to Nome, Alaska on our 28-day cruise.

We were so close.

We boarded the tender and waited for our trip ashore. At first, it was just a little choppy. Then the fog rolled in. As the conditions changed, the crew kept us informed and gave everyone the option to return to the ship, warm up with some hot chocolate, and wait for the weather to improve.

Most of us stayed. After all, when you’re this close to Nome, it’s hard to give up hope.

An hour passed. Then another announcement. Still no clearance to proceed. Some guests returned to the ship while others continued to wait, optimistic that the weather would cooperate.

Eventually, the fog thickened even more. Everyone was asked to leave the tenders and wait aboard the ship while conditions were reassessed. We watched and waited, but Mother Nature had other plans.

In the end, all tenders and shore excursions were canceled.

Was it disappointing? Absolutely.

But it was also a great reminder of something I often share with my clients: when traveling to remote destinations like Alaska, flexibility is part of the adventure. Cruise lines, captains, and local operators make safety decisions based on conditions at that moment not on the itinerary printed months ago.

The places we visit are incredible because they’re still wild and untamed. Sometimes that means nature gets the final vote.

We may not have made it to Nome today, but we gained a firsthand appreciation for the challenges of operating in one of the world’s most remote regions and for the crews who put safety first every single time.

Onward to the next adventure. The Arctic Circle.

🌄 Today in Valdez, Alaska 🇺🇸

The rain finally left us by mid-morning as we arrived in beautiful Valdez. Because the water here is incredibly deep, our ship couldn’t anchor, so we tendered ashore and spent the day floating in the spectacular bay surrounded by towering mountains and waterfalls.

Valdez is one of Alaska’s most fascinating communities, known for its dramatic scenery, rich history, and remarkable resilience.

A few interesting facts about Valdez:

❄️ The Snowiest City in America
Valdez averages about 330 inches of snow each winter, making it one of the snowiest places in the United States.

🏔️ A City Rebuilt After Disaster
The original town was devastated by the massive 1964 Alaska Earthquake and the tsunamis that followed. The community was rebuilt five miles away on more stable ground.

🛢️ The End of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline
Valdez is the southern terminus of the 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and serves as North America’s largest crude oil port.

⛷️ The Birthplace of Heli-Skiing
With its rugged, untouched peaks, Valdez became famous worldwide for heli-skiing. There are no ski resorts here—adventurous skiers reach the summits by helicopter.

⚓ A Name with Spanish Origins
The harbor was named in 1790 by Spanish explorer Salvador Fidalgo in honor of Spanish Navy Minister Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán.

🌊 The Exxon Valdez Connection
Although the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill is named after the city, the tanker actually ran aground at Bligh Reef, miles from the port. Valdez served as the operational center for the massive cleanup effort.

Today, Valdez is a gateway to Prince William Sound, surrounded by the stunning Chugach Mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. It is truly one of Alaska’s most unique and beautiful destinations.
