Monday magical minute: On a recent visit to the stunning - and malaria free - Samara Karoo Reserve in South Africa, we got lucky with cheetahs. These rare, sleek diurnal cats are nowhere common. So seeing eleven of them over the course of a few days was special. Here are a few of the photographs from Samara, as well as a couple from Lalibela, an eastern Cape reserve where we experienced equally good wildlife viewing.

Observing a white lion in the African wilderness is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. There's one young 8-month old white cub entertaining visitors to the Timbavati Reserve in South Africa right now. Kathy and I were fortunate to see and photograph him recently, on a drive from Walkers Plains Camp.

Spending time on foot with two different family groups of cheetahs at Samara Karoo in South Africa's Great Karoo region was the thrill of a lifetime. Totally relaxed and practically oblivious to our presence, they did their cheetah thing while Kathy and I made the best of the opportunity to get some low-level photos and videos. One or two with the beautiful Camdeboo Mountains in the background.

A pride of 12 lions took to the trees and turned up the volume for us on an early morning drive from Severin Camp in Tsavo West, Kenya. Their roaring finally got everyone else out of camp. Too
late - they all missed the show which we had been marveling at for almost an hour, mostly just us. FOMO is real on safari: don't miss a game drive!

‘Don’t mess with me!’ Tsavo elephants have attitude and for a minute there I thought this one and his two friends wanted to join us in the car. Between them, Tsavo East and West have around 24,000 elephants. No well thought out African safari should be without a signature elephant experience and Tsavo East in particular is a great place for just that
