It’s fitting that we arrived in Zambia’s Kafue National Park in a vintage twin-engine Cessna 337 Skymaster, yesterday. Our first camp, Classic Zambia’s Mtemwa Busanga Camp, has a distinctive ‘old Africa’ feel, harkening back to the time when ‘safari’ was all about being immersed in the bush, with as few distractions and barriers as possible. When the calls of nightjars were not drowned out by the hum of air-conditioning, when fresh camp-baked bread was toasted over charcoal in the mornings, and the sound of nightjars and hippos lulled you to sleep.

Sometimes the technical proficiency of a photograph is not of paramount importance. Such as on a visit to the Lewa Conservancy in Kenya when I had the camera aimed at some egrets - only to see one of them being grabbed by a tawny eagle!

The zebras stole the show from the wildebeest in the Northern Serengeti this year. There were simply thousands of them around in the greater Kogatende area, all the way into the Lamai wedge. Small family groups, huge herds, walking, jumping, running, biting, fighting, an amazing spectacle!

When there's blue storm light in the background on a late afternoon in the northern Serengeti, with a vast expanse of open plains in the foreground, photographers take notice. Waiting for a solitary eland or a mother and baby elephant or a few zebras to show up. This is why we travel all the way there.

Meerkat mania is real. TV shows like Meerkat Manor and others have raised awareness and interest in these fascinating small mammals. Earlier this summer we were pleasantly surprised to come across a small semi-habituated colony of meerkats at Lalibela Reserve in South Africa's Eastern Province. We had photographed them previously in places like Jack's Camp on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans and at Tswalu in the northern Cape. Here are a few photos from all three areas, starting with the Eastern Cape.

Of the African big cats the one which I like most to have in the viewfinder is definitely cheetah. They're rare, they're sleek and they're mostly diurnal - like us humans. This summer, we were fortunate to find them in South Africa's Eastern Cape, in the northern Cape Kalahari at Tswalu, and in the northern Serengeti.

Spotted this adorable baby leopard on our last drive in the Serengeti last week, with guide Stanley from Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp. Waking up, checking us out and then relaxing again... Its mother was actually on top of the big rock above the baby.

Seeing animals on safari is the name of the game - just not when they're running across the airstrip when your pilot is trying to land. Which is exactly what this herd of zebras did yesterday at Grumeti airstrip in the Western Serengeti. The Coastal crew handled it like the pros they are; went around and tried again, successfully.
