We’ve been lucky to host a few of our shuttle guests at our homestead home base of Point Unknown, including this guest! Our unique lodging opportunities include a spacious guest suite overlooking the sled dog play areas, a private tiny cabin, and a camp site. You can even leave your vehicle with us for safekeeping! This season, overnight guests can hear the one-of-a-kind call of the American Bittern(s) from the Points Unknown wetlands. Along with our chorus of songbirds and snipes, the dawn & dusk orchestra is worth coming out for. We hope to see you here!

And he’s off! We just officially dropped Joe off at the Southern Terminus of the Superior Hiking Trail, and his latest epic adventure is officially underway.

Joe hails from the northwest corner of Iowa, but he’s a true nomad at heart with a very specific passion: he is a professional autumn chaser. Every year, Joe plots a brilliant migration route to catch the absolute peak of fall foliage. He kicks off his hiking season down in Arkansas and relentlessly tracks the changing leaves all the way north into Minnesota. This year, he’s taking on a massive new challenge: a sectional thru-hike of the rugged, beautiful Superior Hiking Trail!

Joe is no stranger to the wild north, either. On a previous thru-hike of Isle Royale, he and his hiking partner had the ultimate wilderness experience—not only spotting a moose but coming within mere feet of a wild wolf. (And honestly? I am wildly jealous of that wolf encounter!)

Happy trails, Joe! May the colors be vibrant and the wildlife just the right amount of close.

We had a great time hosting our friends at Backpacking Beyond! Monica was hosting a Backpacking 101 weekend workshop. We met folks from Wisconsin, Iowa and many from Minnesota who were thrilled to be soaking up all of the knowledge shared.

Spring! Our shuttle guest today is an airplane mechanic, getting away from the big city for a training trip on a portion of the Superior Hiking Trail - training for a 50 mile hike in Iceland in July! Do you notice your trail guardians; those messengers that appear to open your eyes to the wisdom of nature? Austin & Phil were fortunate to have crossed paths with two ring-tail hawks on our shuttle ride to the Eastern Terminus of the Border Route Trail.

We shuttled these two friends from the Western Terminus of the Border Route Trail the day before, they stayed in our Tiny Tuloon Cabin at our Points Unknown base camp that night, and then we shuttled them to their final destination the next morning. They were excited to share that they completed the Superior Hiking Trail in various sections, in multiple weekends, one section at a time. Now they are ready for the challenge of the 65 mile Border Route Trail that is more rugged and much more remote. They're shooting for 6 days and then they'll head back to stay with us again before they return to home.

I wonder what wisdom their trail guardians will impart. We're looking forward to hearing their story when they return!

These friends are excited to see a different side of the BWCAW. They’ve done canoe trips through it many times, this is their first hike through the area on the Border Route Trail! They’re excited to disconnect from screens and get away from the city. It’s a great time for it! No bugs! It has been so chilly, we drove by one area where there was still snow on the ground!
