That’s a latrine, not a trash can!

The latrines on the Superior Hiking Trail are designed for two things: human waste and toilet paper! While throwing trash into a latrine may not seem like the biggest deal, it creates issues.

One risk of putting food or other garbage in the latrine is that it could attract bears and critters of all sorts. That’s the most dangerous reason to not throw your food or trash in the latrine, but doing so also causes issues for trail maintenance.

Putting trash in the latrine means it will fill up faster. Our volunteers and contractors then have to replace the latrine earlier, which costs money! This takes away money that can be used for other important trail projects and improvements.

Keeping trash out of the latrine maintains a clean, safe environment for both humans and wildlife! Remember, even if you feel like you can’t finish your dehydrated dinner, you have to pack it out.

How fun is this? Someone asked about coyotes. Well, those live closer to the shore. We're inland, up the Arrowhead Trail, close to the Northern Terminus of the SHT/Eastern Terminus of the BRT where our wildest canid neighbors are the wolves.

Drive 85 miles, round trip, on the remote back roads in our north woods neighborhood for a milk shake? Of course! This is why, when we started this Remote Access Shuttle business last year, we knew we would love it. And we do!! It has been so much fun for us to share our wild back yard with you, this past year, as we support you on your trail adventures and share our local stories with you. If we haven't met you yet, we can't wait! Where can we Pick You Up? www.SuperiorByNature.com

These two have moose fever! The Outpost Motel, where they stayed before their adventure, gave them a tiny moose figurine named Otis. They hope it brings them good luck because the thing they want to see the most is a moose! One friend is thru-hiking and the other is coming along for the first five days, so they have plenty of time to see one. While sightings are mostly up to chance and luck, the part of the trail closest to our home base, Points Unknown, is prime moose habitat. We regularly spot them on our trail cams and sometimes along the way to pick guests up! So we wish these two some extra good luck in their quest to find Big Otis!
