What a way to kick off our long-awaited Perú: Manú to Machu Picchu tour! In fact, we began far from the main areas of the tour, making the most of an early arrival to bird coastal wetlands at Chilca and take boats around Isla Pucusana!
Wow… amazing looks at fabulous birds, the beauties here and many more. Participant Kostecke took these shots of HUMBOLDT’S PENGUIN (woohoo!), WREN-LIKE RUSHBIRD, and COASTAL MINER. The rest I managed to digiscope between round after round of great scope views of so many Lifers! We learned from our guide Johanna that the penguins have had a very poor reproductive season, as the super El Niño caused the huge schools of anchovy to fail — their main food source.
Tomorrow, although (painfully) early… we fly to Cusco for our introduction to high elevation Andean birding! ❤️🇵🇪🙌🏻

🇨🇴🐦 ¡Viva COLOMBIA! ⛰️🇨🇴 We are so excited to announce our first East West Birding Experience in the country with the greatest avian diversity in the world! Starting and ending in the capital of Bogotá, we will explore vibrant wetlands, páramo ecosystems, ancient cloud forests, and other habitats of the Eastern Andes. We hope to encounter and enjoy over 250 species in a relatively small area over 11 days (including travel days). Woohoo! We are having a prolific Monsoon Rain season here in beautiful SE Arizona! 💦⛈️💦⛈️
All that precious 💦 brings about huge changes in our deserts, canyons, and grasslands: creeks begin to flow, flowers bloom, insects abound, and grasses and forbs explode into a sea of 🟢🌾🟢🌿🟢🌵
We call it our “Second Spring,” and for good reason! A good monsoon season — and the abundance of resources it produces — kicks birds into high gear as if it were May! Many species get busy raising a 2nd brood, others may delay through the driest/hottest times and start late, while others always hold out until the rainy season to nest for the 1st time! Among the latter “monsoon obligate breeders” are FIVE-STRIPED SPARROW, BOTTERI’S SPARROW, CASSIN’S SPARROW, and the Holy-Grail-Quail 🏆🐦: MONTEZUMA QUAIL.
