Over the past several years, Maryna Bilak has honed her craft of creating frescos, an ancient and lasting art form. On top of a layer of light cement, she mixes slaked lime with sand, and creates a fresco layer, intonaco, then applies pigments to its surface. The chemical reaction with limestone and oxygen seals the colored pigments into the stone, creating a permanent work of art. When working with frescos, the artist must set aside a certain amount of work to be accomplished within an eight to ten hour period, or ‘within a day.’ In Italian, the term is giornate. Even the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a fresco by Michelangelo, was divided into individual daily workable segments.
